Man City confirmed as Premier League champions

Manchester City were confirmed as Premier League champions with three games to spare after second-placed Manchester United lost 2-1 at home to Leicester City on Tuesday (May 11).

Pep Guardiola's City side, who missed the chance to seal the title when they were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea on Saturday, are 10 points clear of United, who also have three games left. It is City's third Premier League title in five seasons under Guardiola and their fifth in the last 10.

* Danny Ings scored twice on his return from injury to help Southampton bounce back from conceding an early goal and beat Crystal Palace 3-1 in their Premier League clash at St Mary's on Tuesday. The win lifts Southampton to 14th spot in the table on 40 points, one behind 13th-placed Palace.

* Napoli climbed into second place in Serie A and moved a step closer to Champions League qualification with a 5-1 win at home to Udinese on Tuesday. Gennaro Gattuso’s side are on 73 points, one above Atalanta and AC Milan and four ahead of fifth-placed Juventus.

* Sporting were crowned Portuguese champions for the first time since 2002 when they beat Boavista 1-0 at home on Tuesday. Sporting, who are still unbeaten with two games left, have 82 points after 32 matches, an unassailable eight-point advantage over second-placed Porto.

* The postponed women's 2021 Rugby World Cup will now be held in New Zealand from Oct 8 to Nov. 12 next year, the sport's global governing body said in a statement on Wednesday. The tournament was originally scheduled for September and October this year but in March it was postponed until 2022 due to uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

* The England & Wales Cricket Board on Tuesday reported a loss of 16.1 million pounds (US$22.78 million) for the past year after its finances took a hit from the COVID-19 pandemic.

* Tottenham Hotspur will have fan representation on their board, the Premier League club said on Tuesday, as they look to make amends following their involvement in the attempt to create a breakaway European Super League last month.

* Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire faces a race to be fit for their Europa League final against Villarreal on May 26 after sustaining an ankle ligament injury, the club said on Tuesday. England international Maguire, who has been ever-present in United's defence starting all 34 of the second-placed outfit's Premier League games this season, suffered the problem in Sunday's 3-1 victory at Aston Villa.

* American rider Joe Dombrowski claimed his first professional win outside of the United States by taking victory in stage four of the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday, while Italian Alessandro De Marchi took the overall leader’s pink jersey from compatriot Filippo Ganna.

* Paris St Germain midfielder Marco Verratti faces up to six weeks on the sidelines after sustaining a right knee injury, the Ligue 1 club said on Tuesday, casting doubt over his participation at the European Championship. The 28-year-old, who has won 40 international caps with Italy, picked up the injury during training last week and missed PSG's 1-1 draw with Stade Rennes on Sunday.

* Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said on Tuesday he is embarking on some of the most thrilling weeks of his managerial career with his club in two finals and in a strong position to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League. Tuchel's side face Leicester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday before meeting Manchester City in the Champions league title clash on May 29.

* Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon says he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season but could still join another team if he receives a suitable offer. The 43-year-old first joined the Turin club from Parma in 2001 and has been there ever since, with the exception of one season at French side Paris Saint-Germain in 2018-19.

* Two Schalke 04 players are isolating after testing positive for COVID-19 but their delayed Bundesliga game against Hertha Berlin on Wednesday will take place as scheduled, the club said on Tuesday. The game had been delayed last month after Hertha went into a two-week quarantine following a string of positive cases within the team.

* Saudi Arabia will host the world heavyweight boxing title unification fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in August, promoter Eddie Hearn said on Tuesday.

* Real Madrid's injury crisis dragged on when left back Ferland Mendy was on Tuesday ruled out for the rest of the season with a shin problem, leaving coach Zinedine Zidane without all four of his first choice defenders. A medical report published by Real said the Frenchman, Real's first choice left back, had been diagnosed with shin splints.

* AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss at least two of his team's three remaining Serie A matches this season through injury, Stefano Pioli said on Tuesday. The 39-year-old, who has scored 15 league goals in 19 appearances this season, was hurt during Sunday’s 3-0 win at Juventus and will miss Wednesday’s trip to Torino and the home match against Cagliari.

* Scotland midfielder Kenny McLean will miss the European Championship because of a knee injury, his club Norwich City said on Tuesday. McLean, who bagged two goals and six assists in England's second-tier Championship this season, will be out for almost three months after picking up the injury in last weekend's 2-2 draw at Barnsley on the final day of the season.

* Former Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta said on Tuesday that he has extended his contract with Vissel Kobe by another two years and wants to keep working towards making the Japanese side the best in Asia. Spanish World Cup winner Iniesta, who also celebrated his 37th birthday on Tuesday, signed a three-year contract with Kobe in 2018 after leaving Barcelona, where he won nine La Liga and four Champions Leagues titles.
