The selected players include 27 currently practising at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre, together with young midfielder Nguyen Hai Long from the Vietnam U22 team, and goalkeeper Dang Van Lam who is playing for J1 League club Cerezo Osaka.

At the proposal from the Vietnam Football Federation and under the support from Cerezo Osaka, the 28-year-old goalie will fly from Japan to the UAE on May 27 to gather with the Vietnamese national squad.

Most notably, Park left out veteran striker Nguyen Anh Duc, 36, but gave opportunities to two other 1980s-born players, midfielder Nguyen Trong Hoang (32, Viettel FC) and goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong (35, Hanoi FC).

Hanoi FC is contributing the most players to the squad (nine), followed by Hoang Anh Gia Lai (seven) and Viettel FC (five).

Tomorrow afternoon (May 26), the Vietnamese team will leave for the UAE on a Bamboo Airways flight that takes off at 4.10pm at Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport and is expected to land in Dubai, UAE, at 10.40pm (Vietnamese time) the same day.

Regarding COVID-19 prevention and control regulations, all members of the squad were sampled for RT-PCR tests on May 24 to get SARS-CoV-2 negative certificates before their UAE departure. Samples will be taken again for similar tests after they land at the Dubai International Airport and perform entry procedures.

Due to the impact of the pandemic, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has adjusted regulations concerning the registration of players. Accordingly, the teams will decide on their final 23-player squad from the 29-member preliminary list no later than 90 minutes before each match.

As scheduled, Park Hang-seo’s Vietnamese side will play a friendly match against Jordan in the UAE on May 31 before entering their three World Cup qualifying matches against Indonesia, Malaysia and the UAE on June 7, 11 and 15, respectively.
