Salisbury ends the UK’s long wait for French Open success

Joe Salisbury ended the UK’s 39-year wait for a main draw title at the French Open when he combined with American Desirae Krawczyk to win the mixed doubles at Roland Garros on Thursday.

Krawczyk and Salisbury rallied from a set down to beat the Russian pair of Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev 2-6 6-4 (10-5) to clinch the title on a sun-bathed Philippe Chatrier court.

* Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat world number 85 Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia 7-5, 6-3 to reach a first Grand Slam final at a record 52nd attempt at the French Open on Thursday (Jun 10).

* Czech Barbora Krejcikova reached the French Open final as she beat Greek 17th seed Maria Sakkari 7-5 4-6 9-7 in a nail-biting, see-saw contest on Thursday . Krejcikova will face Russian 31st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who will also be making her maiden appearance in a major singles final, on Saturday.

* Briton Sebastian Coe was awarded the keys to the city of Florence on Thursday to mark the 40th anniversary of his 800 metres world record run in the Italian city. Coe set a time of 1 minute 41.73 seconds on June 10, 1981, a mark that remained in the record books until 1997 when it was broken by Denmark’s Wilson Kipketer.

* The Australian city of Brisbane moved closer to landing the 2032 Olympics on Thursday (Jun 10) after winning the approval of the International Olympic Committee's executive board and the choice will be put to a final vote next month.

* Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana's year-long ban by European soccer's governing body UEFA for violating doping rules has been reduced to nine months after an appeal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said in a statement. A panel of CAS arbitrators in charge of the matter partially upheld the player's appeal and reduced his ban that commenced on Feb. 4, meaning he will now be eligible to play from Nov. 3.

* French President Emmanuel Macron urged the country's star soccer striker Kylian Mbappe on Thursday to stay at Paris Saint Germain (PSG) and to remain within the French domestic league. Earlier this week, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi had said Mbappe would stay at the Ligue 1 club next season.

* Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum will join Paris St Germain from Premier League side Liverpool on a three-year deal, the French Ligue 1 side announced on Thursday. The 30-year-old Wijnaldum made 237 appearances and scored 22 goals for Liverpool in all competitions, lifting the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup titles with them.

* Premier League club Norwich City on Thursday (Jun 10) ended their partnership with kit sponsor BK8 following supporters' criticism of the Asian betting company's provocative marketing material online. Norwich, who won the second-tier Championship last season to qualify for the top flight, had announced BK8 as their new shirt sponsor on Monday for the 2021-22 season.

* Celtic have appointed former Australia coach Ange Postecoglou as their new manager following the exit of Neil Lennon, the Scottish Premiership club announced on Thursday (Jun 10). Postecoglou joins Celtic from Japanese club Yokohama F Marinos.

* Former AS Roma coach Paulo Fonseca is in talks with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur to be their next manager, according to British media reports. The 48-year-old Portuguese would fill the vacancy on a full-time basis and replace his compatriot Jose Mourinho who was sacked in April - Mourinho has since taken over the reins at Fonseca's old club Roma.

* New Zealand women's soccer coach Tom Sermanni will step down after the Tokyo Olympics, the country's governing body (NZF) said on Thursday. The 66-year-old joined New Zealand's 'Football Ferns' in October 2018 and led them at the 2019 World Cup where they crashed out in the group stage.
