International visitors to Vietnam decrease 78.7% in 2020

Vietnam welcomed an estimated 3.8 million foreign visitors in 2020, down 78.7% from the same period last year.

This information was announced by the General Statistics Office (GSO) on December 27.

Accordingly, of the total amount of people that visited in 2020, those travelling by air reached nearly 3.08 million (down 78.6%)while arrivals by sea counted 144,700 (down 45.2%) and by road reached 609,400 (down 81.9%).

Tourists from Asia totalled 2.8 million, accounting for 73.3% of the total number of arrivals, 80.4% lower than that from the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the number of visitors from Europe in the period saw a year-on-year decrease of 69%, visitors from America decreased 75.7%; visitors from Oceania decreased 76.2%; arrivals from Africa decreased 73.9%.

In December alone, the number of international tourists to the country was estimated at 16,300 visitors, a decline of 8.1% compared to the previous month and 99% from the same period last year.

The total revenue from tourism is estimated at VND17.9 trillion, down 59.5% from the same period last year.
