Speaking at the event, Brigadier Tran Van Nuoc recalled the glorious 60-year history of the unit.
The 962nd Brigade was established in 1962 to build and expand the wharves along the coast from Ca Mau to Ba Ria-Vung Tau to receive the aid of weapons and military goods from the north for the southern battlefields.
During the years from 1962 to 1975, the brigade overcame great hardship to safely receive 125 ships, and store and transport thousands of tonnes of weapons and military goods to several battlefields.
The brigade also protected many delegations of officials, including high-level Party and military officials, who were dispatched as reinforcement for the revolution in the south, contributing to the overall victory in 1975.
After the national reunification, the brigade was re-organised under the 9th Military Region and was tasked with defending the southwestern border and assisting the Cambodian revolution.
With its military feats and excellent achievements, the 962nd Brigade has been honoured twice with the title Hero of the People’s Armed Forces and other high accolades.
At the anniversary ceremony, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan presented a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh to the officers and soldiers of the 962nd Brigade.
