Party chief chairs first meeting of 2020-2025 Central Military Commission
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong chaired the first meeting of the Central Military Commission (2020-2025 tenure) in Hanoi on June 17.
The meeting announced the Politburo's decision on the assignment of members of the commission and its Standing Board. Accordingly, the Central Military Commission (2020-2025 term) comprises 25 members, while its Standing Board is staffed by six, including Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
In his remarks, Party chief Trong asked the commission to be well aware of its responsibility, and build an army that is absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, Party, State and people.

A complex of monuments commemorating Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's journey to seek ways to save his country from the Pol Pot genocidal regime was inaugurated in Loc Ninh district, Vietnam's southern border province of Binh Phuoc, on June 20.
On June 20, 1977, after crossing the Cambodia - Vietnam border and arriving in Binh Phuoc, Hun Sen, who was then a lieutenant colonel of Region 21 in eastern Cambodia, and his comrades decided to seek help from Vietnam to overthrow the Pol Pot genocidal regime to regain peace for his homeland.
The official said the complex is expected to help people, including the young, learn more about the odyssey to save Cambodia from the Pol Pot genocidal regime, as well as the Vietnamese Party, State, and people's support for the mission.
Vietnam's treatment for UN employee marks new milestone in bilateral ties
Vietnam's successful treatment of a United Nations employee who contracted COVID-19 has marked a new step of development in the cooperation between the two sides, while proving the country's increasingly important role in the regional and international arena, UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Kamal Malhotra has said.
Vietnam, at the request of the UN, had received and successfully treated a UN staff member who contracted the coronavirus while working in a regional country and was in critical condition.
According to Malhotra, one of the reasons that the UN asked Vietnam to treat the UN staff member was the country's good performance in COVID-19 prevention and control, with a low rate of infections, as well as its good medical services.
Vietnam's exports to EU surge amidst COVID-19
Vietnam exported US$16.1 billion worth of goods to the EU during January-May.
Trade in goods between Vietnam and the European Union (EU) has seen positive growth since the beginning of 2021, despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Vietnam exported US$16.1 billion worth of goods to the EU during January-May, while importing commodities worth US$6.7 billion from the bloc, up 20.1 percent and 16.8 percent compared to the same period last year, respectively.
With the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, Vietnam's export to the bloc has bounced back since the end of 2020, said Tran Thanh Hai, deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Import-Export Department.
First flow of gas pumped out of Su Tu Trang oil field in phase 2A
The Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) on June 18 welcomed the first flow of gas from Su Tu Trang (White Lion) oil field in phase 2A.
The White Lion field is located in Block 15-1 of the Cuu Long Basin off the southern coast of Vietnam. It is considered as one of the areas with the highest potential for oil and gas reserves in the continental shelf of Vietnam.
PetroVietnam's General Director Le Manh Hung said Block 15-1 is the flagship in oil and gas exploitation activities in Vietnam, bringing benefits to all involved parties, and contributing about US$10.4 billion to the Vietnamese Government's budget.
Severe heat wave hits north, central regions
Northern and north-central provinces are sizzling in a severe hot wave, with temperatures ranging from 37-40 degrees Celsius and even over 40 degrees C in some places, announced the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
The extreme weather, which will cause the temperatures to stay at above 35 degrees C from 10 to 19 hours per day, will come along with low humidity of between 40% and 60%.
The country is projected to face more widespread heatwaves this month.
Vietnam aims to achieve herd immunity by year end or early 2022: Health minister
With the goal of vaccinating about 70 million people, Vietnam aims to achieve herd immunity by the end of 2021 or in early 2022, Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long has said.
According to Long, Vietnam is about to launch its largest-scale vaccination campaign ever with around 150 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to be injected, but with safety always put first.
The campaign will be deployed in injection venues in all communes and wards across the nation. In addition to the existent vaccination venues, the campaign will deploy more mobile vaccination camps at factories, schools and some other areas to ensure that Vietnamese people have access to vaccines in the most convenient and simple manner.
Vietnam make history with first-ever slot in final round of World Cup qualifiers

Vietnam have secured their maiden progression into the final round of the World Cup Asian qualifiers as one of the best group runners-up despite conceding a 2-3 defeat against the United Arab Emirates in their last Group G match on June 15.
The win meant UAE dethroned Vietnam from the top spot of Group G on the final day to reach the final round of the Asian qualifiers for the second time running while there was joy for Vietnam regardless of the defeat as they advanced for the first time in their history.
The Golden Star Warriors settled for second place in Group G stage with 17 points, one behind leaders UAE and five points clear of third-placed Malaysia, who edged past Thailand with a score of 1-0 on the same day.
