Politburo agrees on continued support for pandemic-hit employees, employers

The Politburo has agreed in principle to continue issuing policies supporting the employees and employers hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chairing the Politburo’s meeting in Hanoi on June 25, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said that support will be provided for employees and employers hit by the pandemic so as to simultaneously sustain production activities and fight against the disease, which are also the twin targets of the country now.

At the meeting, the Politburo assigned the Party units at the Government and the National Assembly to base on its opinions to order relevant agencies to devise, soon issue, and effectively carry out support policies.

The Party chief demanded the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, ministries, sectors, and localities to make timely response to the pandemic’s developments while stepping up examination and inspection to strictly deal with any violations and prevent losses and wastefulness during the enforcement of those policies.

Vietnam attends Asia & Pacific High-level Conference on Belt & Road Cooperation

Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son on June 23 attended the Asia and Pacific High-level Conference on Belt and Road Cooperation at the invitation of China State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Themed “Promoting Cooperation on Combating the Pandemic for Sustainable Recovery”, the event focused its discussion on challenges faced by the region, especially COVID-19 impacts, and efforts to cope with the pandemic and promote economic recovery, towards developing green and circular economy for sustainable and inclusive growth on both regional and national scales.

Priorities should be given to the full and on-schedule fulfillment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals till 2030 and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, cooperation in green economic development and environment, sustainable infrastructure development, clean energy, and improvement of the capacity to respond to climate change.

Revolutionary Press Day marked nationwide

A wide variety of practical activities were held nationwide and abroad over the past week on June 21 to mark the 96th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day.

At a meeting on June 20 with representatives from press agencies, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that the government always appreciates and facilitates the operation of press agencies and hoped to receive support and recommendations from the press to build a government of integrity, which acts drastically and effectively for the sake of people and the nation.

Leaders of the Party, State, ministries, sectors and agencies visited and congratulated journalists’ associations and major press agencies, including Nhan Dan (People’s) Newspaper, the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) and Vietnam Television (VTV) on the occasion.

Vietnamese embassies abroad also held meetings and ceremonies to celebrate the special occasion of press workers.

Leaders extend condolences over death of Greek Hero of People's Armed Forces

State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and former President Nguyen Minh Triet on June 26 expressed profound condolences over the death of Greek Hero of the Vietnam People's Armed Forces Kostas Sarantidis.

The same day, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh also did the same, while Minister of National Defense Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son, and President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations Nguyen Phuong Nga sent messages of condolences to the family of the deceased 94-year-old.

Sarantidis, was born in 1927 in Athens. The soldier, with the Vietnamese name of Nguyen Van Lap, had made various accomplishments during his service and was presented with awards from the Party and State.

He was honoured with the Friendship Order and received Vietnamese citizenship in January 2011. In 2013, Lap was awarded with the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces of Vietnam.

National population data centre makes debut

The national population data centre and the system for making, granting, and managing citizen identity cards made debut on June 22, and they will officially come into operation on July 1.

The official operation of the national population database and the citizen ID database a stride in the national governance reform to meet the regional and international integration demand.

The two projects’ outcomes will create optimal conditions for the provision of online public services and the reform of citizen management activities, thus helping with the crime fight and ensuring social order and safety.

Vietnam's investment abroad rises 2.5 times in six months

Total investment of Vietnamese investors abroad reached nearly US$547 million in the first six months of this year, up nearly 2.5 times over the same period in 2020.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, 24 new projects were licensed in the first half of this year with total registered capital of US$143.8 million while nine projects saw expanded capital of US$403.2 million.

Vietnamese investor invested in 12 areas, with largest investment in science and technology at US$270.8 million, accounting for 49.5% of total investment abroad. Wholesale and retail sales came in second with investment of US$148.6 million, accounting for 27.2% of the total.

Fifteen countries and territories received investment from Vietnam in the first six months of this year with largest investment in the US, Cambodia, Canada, France and others.

Vietnamese lychees reach EU consumers through e-commerce platform

More than three tonnes of lychee from the northern province of Bac Giang has been exported to Germany via the e-commerce platform Voso.

The Vietnam E-Commerce and Digital Economy Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade said this is the first time Vietnam’s agricultural products have been shipped to Europe through the “cross-border e-commerce” model on an e-commerce platform developed and operated by the Southeast Asian nation.

Sponsored by Viettel Post, Voso launched its Voso Global last March, offering high-quality Vietnamese farm produce to consumers in foreign markets, especially overseas Vietnamese.

More farming products are expected to be put on the platform in the time ahead, thus serving consumers both at home and abroad.

All four Vietnamese students win silver at Int’l informatics Olympiad

All four Vietnamese students participating in the International Olympiad in Informatics 2021 brought home silver medals, according to the Ministry of Education and Training’s Quality Management Department.

The International Olympiad in Informatics 2021, hosted by Singapore, attracted the participation of 351 students from 90 universities and territories. Vietnamese students competed on June 19, 22 and 25 at the University of Technology under the Vietnam National University - Hanoi.

Earlier, the Vietnamese delegation to the 14th Edition of the International Invention and Innovation Contest (INTARG) 2021 brought home two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. Held on June 15-16 in virtual format, the contest attracted many inventions and innovative solutions from contestants worldwide, including Canada, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, and China.

Vietnamese wins Best Actor Award at 18th Asian Film Festival

Tran Anh Khoa, playing Rom in the movie of the same name, took home the Best Actor Award at the 18th Asian Film Festival taking place in Rome from June 17 to 23. The award is among the five most important of the festival, together with the Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, and Most Original Film.

Khoa’s performance was described as “an interpretation of instinct, energy and dynamism for a character who moves in the chaos and madness of Ho Chi Minh City”.

“Rom” was among the four Vietnamese movies screened in the festival, with three others including “Bac Kim Thang” (Home Sweet Home), “Bo Gia” (Dad, I'm sorry), and “Tiec trang mau” (Blood Moon Party).

The Asian Film Festival in Italy is organised by the Roberts Bresson Film Foundation which selects the best films in East Asia, with special attention given to young directors. A total of 28 feature and two short films from 11 East Asian countries such as Japan, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore, are featured at the event.

Vietnam climbed one place to 32nd in the latest FIFA women’s rankings released on Friday (June 25).

With 1,657 points, coach Mai Duc Chung’s side remained at No. 6 in Asia’s top 10, followed by Thailand (39th), Chinese Taipei (40th), Uzbekistan (43rd), and Myanmar (46th).

The United States confirmed their position at the top of the global table ahead of Germany, while France overtook the Dutch to reach third place in the rankings.
