Vietnam attends first Global Parliamentary Meeting on Achieving SDGs

A Vietnamese delegation attended the first Global Parliamentary Meeting on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which was held by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the House of Representatives of Indonesia via videoconference from September 28-30.

Themed “Turning the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic into opportunities for parliaments to achieve the SDGs”, the event saw the attendance of about 130 parliamentarians from nearly 60 IPU member parliaments.

Discussions at the event focused on the role of parliaments in achieving the SDGs amid the pandemic, the delivery of commitments to “leaving no one behind”, and prioritised investment in people’s health care.

Participants stressed that parliaments should effectively tap internal resources and promote cooperation with countries in implementing the SDGs.

Microsoft honours Vietnam’s three schools and 265 education experts

Microsoft has just officially announced that three schools in Vietnam have been granted certificates from the Microsoft’s Showcase School programme and 265 staff members and teachers have won the title of Microsoft Innovative Educators (MIE) for the 2021-2022 school year.

The three schools include the Wellspring Hanoi Inter-level Bilingual School and Vo Thanh Trinh High School in An Giang Province, and Sky-Line School in Da Nang. They will join more than 400 educational institutions worldwide to become Microsoft Showcase Schools for this school year.

The Microsoft Showcase School certificate is awarded to schools that are exemplary in implementing digital transformation and applying information technology to improve learning and teaching results, thereby creating an advanced education system.

Domestic flights resume from October 1

Domestic flights began to officially resume on October 1 under a four-phase plan outlined by the Ministry of Transport, which is applied in localities with relaxed COVID-19 prevention and control measures.

In the first phase, to be carried within 10 days, airlines may resume air routes with a flight frequency not exceeding half that of during the first 10 days of April, the time before the fourth coronavirus wave broke out in Vietnam. Seats on the planes must be distanced as well

In the second phase, to last for no more than 10 days, the frequency will be increased to not exceed 70%. No seat distancing is required.

The third phase will see the flight frequency return to the level as seen in the first 10 days of April (but not exceeding it), with no seat distancing required. The final phase will see airlines resume activities as normal.

Vietnamese students win third prize at ASEAN youth journalism contest

Two Vietnamese student has secured the third prize at the 2nd ASEAN Youth Social Journalism Contest 2021 for their social media campaign to raise awareness about plastic consumption among young Vietnamese people amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hoang Nguyen Nhat Vi and Pham Quang Vinh, both from the RMIT University Vietnam, obtained the award with a project titled “Flatten the Plastic Curve”, which reached close to 200,000 young audiences in just a month.

Following the theme ASEAN Youth and COVID-19 ─ Response, Recovery, and Resilience, the pair, through the use of comic-like graphics and influencer marketing, worked to persuade young shoppers to take small but impactful actions while making their orders online.

The project encouraged young people to make changes, such as ordering from one shop to minimise the use of plastic packages, or directly sending plastic-reduction messages to shop owners or food shippers.

Vietnamese photo named among world’s most spectacular travel images

Photo “Bamboo baskets seller” by Vietnamese photographer Ly Hoang Long won a merit award at the 2021 All About Photo Travel Contest.

The photo was taken in a craft village that has made bamboo fishing baskets for more than 200 years. It was captured as a resident of Tat Vien Village, Tien Lu District, in the northern province of Hung Yen, crossed a bridge with a bicycle carrying several dozens of bamboo fishing baskets.

All About Photo, an online magazine dedicated to showcasing the work of photographers around the world, received thousands of entries for the Travel Photos of the Year contest that was judged by a panel of 10 experts.

All the works winning at the contest will be published in the AAP Winners Gallery and the 20th Edition of AAP Magazine.

Vietnam Pavilion inaugurated at Expo 2020 Dubai

The Vietnam Pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai was inaugurated at a ceremony held on October 1 at the event’s venue in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Spanning an area of 850 square metres, the pavilion impresses with 800 conical hats hanging at the front area, and the miniatures of 18 artworks created by renowned Vietnamese contemporary artists.

Themed ‘Distilling the Past, Shaping the Future”, it comprises exhibition zones introducing different sides of Vietnam to international friends. Visitors can experience Vietnam’s destinations via virtual reality and explore ‘Make-in-Vietnam’ products such as Dragon satellites, sneakers made from discarded coffee grounds and plastic bottles, and ST25 rice variety.

Vietnamese sisters win Grand Prix at international children's drawing contest

Two Vietnamese sisters Trinh Hien Minh and Trinh Nha Minh from Hanoi have won the Grand Prix at the international children's drawing contest named “Nature of the planet”.

Nine-year-old Hien Minh won the award with her paintings “Nhanh Xuan” (Spring Branch) and “Chu bac tuoc vui ve” (Happy Octopus), while six-year-old Nha Minh received the award with the painting “Buom - Nhung bong hoa tu van dong” (Butterflies: flowers that move by themselves).

The contest, part of “The world through the eyes of children” project, was held from February to June, attracting the participation of children from 3 to 18 years old. All entries were exhibited at the Botanical Garden of the Moscow State University (MGU) from September 1-30.

Vietnam forward Pham Hai Yen among AFC’s top six performers in 2022 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers

Vietnam’s attacking spearhead Pham Hai Yen has been named among the best players in the 2022 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers as the-AFC.com picked out its six standout individual performers from the 12-day campaign.

Talking about the 26-year-old forward, the AFC article emphasised: “The pandemic played a key role in her inability to score at internationals for almost two years prior, but Pham Hai Yen more than made up for it in Dushanbe, producing a barely believable return with two games, 135 minutes, and eight goals.”
