Party leader holds online talks with RoK President
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong held online talks with President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Yoon Suk-yeol on June 8, as the two countries are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their bilateral diplomatic ties.
President Yoon expressed his delight at the development of the relations, affirming that his country wishes to remain a trusted partner in Vietnam’s new development stage and considers the Southeast Asian country one of its most important partners in its policy towards the region.
The Vietnamese Party leader welcomed the RoK’s role in and positive contributions to regional cooperation frameworks and international issues for peace, cooperation, friendship and development.
Party General Secretary Trong took the occasion to invite President Yoon to visit Vietnam. The latter accepted the invitation and invited the former to visit his country at an appropriate time.

Vietnam sees off 156 sappers to UN peacekeeping mission in Abyei
A ceremony took place on June 12 to bid farewell to the remaining 156 members of Vietnam’s Engineering Unit Rotation 1, as they left for peacekeeping duty at the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
The group was scheduled to move to Uganda first then to Abyei.
It was the second deployment of the unit, with the first 28 members leaving Vietnam on May 3 and arriving in Abyei on May 5.
Vietnam-Laos trade turnover on the rise
Trade revenue between Vietnam and Laos in the first five months of this year stood at 690.6 million USD, up 21 percent year-on-year.
According to the Vietnamese Trade Office in Laos, Vietnam’s export value reached 255.02 million USD, down 9 percent, but its import hit nearly 435.58 million USD, up 50 percent.
Vietnam’s major export items included iron and steel (36.5 million USD); oil and gas, fertilizer, fruits and vegetables (nearly 20 million USD); and ceramics, electrical wires and cables, paper, textiles and garments (nearly 7 million USD), among others.

Vietnam ranked 68th of 120 countries in the 2021 Open Budget Survey.
Vietnam ranked 68th of 120 countries in the 2021 Open Budget Survey (OBS), up nine places from 2019 and 23 notches compared to 2017, according to the Ministry of Finance.
It is notable that Vietnam has seen improvements in the scores of all the three measures, namely public participation, budget oversight and transparency, which have the respective scores of 17/100, 80/100 and 44/100.
Such results have demonstrated Vietnam’s efforts to enhance budget openness and transparency.
Five Vietnamese universities listed in QS WUR 2023
The UK educational organisation Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) announced its 2023 QS World University Rankings (QS WUR 2023) on June 9, with the Vietnam National University (VNU) - Hanoi and VNU - Ho Chi Minh City, and Duy Tan University holding their places in the 801-1,000 group.
Ton Duc Thang University is ranked in the group of 1001-1200 and Hanoi University of Science and Technology in the group 1201-1400.

A Uzbek version of late Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh’s collection of poems “Nhat Ky Trong Tu” (Prison Diary) was made public at a ceremony which took place at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies (TSUOS) in Uzbekistan.
“Nhat Ky Trong Tu” features more than 100 poems written in Chinese characters during the 12 months between 1942 and 1943 when Ho Chi Minh was imprisoned in China's Guangxi province.
Australian magazine praises Phu Quoc as “Lovers’ Island”
Traveller magazine has praised Phu Quoc, an island in Vietnam’s southern province of Kien Giang, as “Lovers’ Island”.
In its recent article entitled ‘25 incredible bucket-list islands tourists are yet to discover’, the Australian magazine said that Phu Quoc has everything for the honeymoon mood: luxury resort hotels and spas, great seafood restaurants and chic cocktail bars, along with shimmering reefs and castaway islets.
Vietnam crash out of U23 Asian Cup with quarter-final loss to Saudi Arabia

Vietnam were knocked out of the AFC U23 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2022 on June 12 night, losing 0-2 to Saudi Arabia in the quarter-final at the Lokomotiv Stadium in Tashkent.
The three other semi-finalists include Japan, Uzbekistan and Australia.
