1. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visits the US
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and a delegation of high-ranking Vietnamese officials paid an official visit to the United States of America from May 29-31 at the invitation of President Donald Trump.
During his stay in the US, PM Phuc held talks with US President Donald Trump, met a number of US parliamentarians and ministers, attended a meeting with US businesses, delivered a speech at the Global Heritage Fund and met with individuals of the Vietnamese community in the US.
He also met with Secretary-General of the UN António Guterres and attended a ceremony marking 40 years of Vietnam’s UN membership.
2. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc pays official visit to Japan

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has departed Vietnam for an official visit to Japan from June 4-8, during which he will attend the 23rd International Conference on the Future of Asia in Tokyo, at the invitation of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
During his visit, PM Phuc will hold talks with his Japanese counterpart, meet with local Japanese officials as well as hold exchanges with Vietnam – Japan trade and friendship organisations.
He will also visit the Vietnam Embassy and talked with the Vietnamese community in Japan.
3. National Assembly continues third session
The National Assembly (NA) convened sessions under the chair of NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
The deputies discussed the draft amendments on the Law on Complaints; the revised draft Law on State Asset Management and Use; the draft amendments to the Law on Tourism; the Law on Railway; and the Law on State Compensation Liability.
In addition, they discussed land clearance for the Long Thanh airport project in southern Dong Nai province.
4. NA Standing Committee opens its 11th meeting

The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee opened its 11th meeting, in Hanoi on June 2, to discuss the issues to be added to the agenda of the parliament’s ongoing third session.
Under the chair of NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, the committee raised their voice on the approval of the proposed appointment of two justices in the Supreme People’s Court, and gave their opinions on the eastern North-South expressway project.
5. Government’s May meeting opens in Hanoi
The Government’s May meeting was held in Hanoi on June 3 to discuss measures to achieve a 6.7% growth set for this year.
The PM directed accelerating capital disbursement which has so far reached 30% while speeding up the equitisation of State-owned enterprises.
Cabinet members were asked to form solutions clearing business obstacles and oversee how State groups and corporations follow the Party Central Committee, National Assembly and government’s policies.
6. Nhan Dan Newspaper wins five prizes at national external information awards

Nhan Dan Newspaper claimed one second prize and four third prizes from the National External Information Service Awards 2016.
The Party newspaper’s solitary second prize was presented to reporter Duy Linh’s photo story, which featured the Ao dai (Vietnamese traditional long dress) festival held at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long in Hanoi and was published on the Vietnamese language version of Nhan Dan online.
Four third place prizes went to a group of reporters of Thoi Nay (Present Time), reporter Nguyen Thi Hong Hanh (print media); reporter Nguyen Hong Minh (electronic media); and the online English version of Nhan Dan Newspaper.
The first prizes were awarded to five most outstanding works.
7. Forbes Vietnam announces top 50 listed companies
Forbes Vietnam, the Vietnamese edition of Forbes Magazine on May 29 announced a list of the top 50 Vietnamese listed companies in 2017, which includes many new firms such as VietJet, Sabeco, Petrolimex, and Novaland.
This is the fifth consecutive year in which Forbes Vietnam has reported the names of the top listed companies.
The top 50 companies were selected from companies with good business performances listed on the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City stock exchanges.
8. Hanoians struggle to survive in scorching heat

Hanoians have struggled with scorching heat in Hanoi over the first four days of June, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius in some places, the highest temperature recorded in the capital’s history over the past four decades.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Hanoi and the northern provinces were the hottest regions nationwide on June 3, with the highest temperature recorded at around 40- 41 degrees Celsius, with humidity below 50%.
9. Vietnam football team up in world football rankings
Vietnam’s national men’s football team has climbed five steps to 131st place in the latest FIFA rankings.
Vietnam remains in third place for Southeast Asia, followed by Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar.
