1. Party General Secretary pays State visit to Cambodia

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and a delegation of high-ranking Vietnamese officials paid a State visit to Cambodia from July 20-22 at the invitation of Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni.

During his stay in Cambodia, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong held talks with Cambodian King Nodorom Sihamoni, meetings with Vice President of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and President of the Senate of Cambodia Samdech Say Chhum, Honorary President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and President of the National Assembly Heng Samrin, and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen.

He also attended an inauguration ceremony of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument in Preah Sihanouk province.

2. Laos Vice President visits Vietnam

Vice President of Laos, Phankham Viphavanh, visited Vietnam to attend the 55th anniversary of Vietnam-Laos diplomatic ties and the ceremony marking 40 years since the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.

The Vice President of Laos attended meetings with top Vietnamese leaders including Party Chief Nguyen Phu Trong, President Tran Dai Quang, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, and PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

3. Vietnam, Thailand boost political-security cooperation

A Vietnamese delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Public Security, Senior Lieutenant General Bui Van Nam, participated in the ninth meeting of the Vietnam-Thailand Joint Working Group on Political-Security Cooperation, in Bangkok from July 16-19.

At the meeting, the two sides shared their views on regional and international issues that have an impact on security in each country, while evaluating their cooperation in politics and security. Both sides affirmed their commitment to not allowing any individual or organisation make use of the territory of one country to harm the other.

4. Australia, US halt alleged dumping investigation into Vietnamese steel, polyester

The Australian Anti-Dumping Commission has terminated its dumping investigation into certain zinc coated (galvanised) steel products imported from Hoa Sen Group and Nam Kim Steel JSC, according to the Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the US Department of Commerce (DOC) has also announced its termination of anti-dumping investigations into the import of fine diner polyester staple fibre from Vietnam as the plaintiff has withdrawn the suit.

5. International Exhibition on Electrical Technology and Equipment opens

The 10th International Exhibition on Electrical Technology and Equipment and the 7th International Exhibition on Products, Technologies for Energy Saving and Green Power opened at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre in Ho Chi Minh City on July 19.

Almost 300 stands from domestic and international enterprises are displaying technologies and equipment for thermal and nuclear power plants, solar and wind power and other alternative energies, as well as electrical transmission systems including transformers, meters, insulators, and other electrical tools.

6. Vietnam, Laos border friendship exchange held

The first Vietnam-Laos border friendship exchange kicked off in the mountainous northern province of Son La on July 22.

The programme aims to foster the solidarity and traditional friendship between Vietnamese and Lao border guards and to increase their collaboration for the sake of constructing a borderline of peace, friendship, co-operation and development.

7. Vietnam Summer Camp kicks off

The 2017 Vietnam Summer Camp was kicked off at a ceremony held by the Foreign Ministry’s State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (SCOVA) and the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, in Ho Chi Minh City, on July 19.

The summer camp is taking place from July 18 to 31 in Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho city and other provinces in the Mekong Delta, featuring the participation of 110 students and young people aged from 16 to 23, who are children of overseas Vietnamese parents.

8. Vietnam – Cambodia border route opens to traffic

Vietnam and Cambodia held a ceremony on July 19 to open the international border gates of Le Thanh - Oyadav in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai and the neighbouring Cambodian province of Ratanakiri to traffic.

The new border crossing comes under the Road Transportation Agreement between the two countries, which facilitates 500 vehicles to travel through seven pairs of international border gates, including the Le Thanh – Oyadav border gates.

9. Vietnam claim title at 2017 AFF U-15 Championships

After holding hosts Thailand to a 0-0 draw after 90 official minutes of the final of the 2017 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U-15 Championships, Vietnam defeated their strong rivals 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout to win the title of the tournament on July 22.

10. Hoi An among 15 world’s best cities

The ancient town of Hoi An in the central province of Quang Nam was named among the 15 best cities in the world in a recent readers’ survey conducted by US travel magazine Travel & Leisure.

Hoi An was ranked seventh on the list with a score of 90.31. According to the magazine, most of the voted cities are pedestrian-friendly, possess ample green spaces and have a rich history that is being actively preserved as the city grows.
