National Assembly Standing Committee convenes 13th session

The 13th session of the National Assembly Standing Committee (NASC) opened in Hanoi on August 10 and will run for seven days.

NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan stated that during this session, the NA Standing Committee will give opinions in regards to controversial issues of the four draft laws. Deputies commented at the NA’s third session in regards to the revised laws on forest protection and development and fisheries. The Standing Committee also discussed public debt management, along with denunciations at the convention. The committee will scrutinize five bills scheduled to be submitted to the NA for consideration at the upcoming fourth session.

First Vice-President of the Cambodian Senate, Ney Pena paid a visit to Vietnam from August 8 to 11. The visit was hailed as a significant event which marked 50 years of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic ties (June 24, 1967-2017), contributing to strengthening the friendly and neighbourly relations between the two countries.

During his stay in Vietnam, First Vice-President Ney Pena was received by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong; Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc; National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan; and Permanent Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Tong Thi Phong.

The 16th session of the Vietnam-Mongolia Inter-governmental Committee for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation discuss a range of cooperation priorities between the two countries.

The 16th session of the Vietnam-Mongolia Inter-governmental Committee for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation was held in Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia.

The two sides discussed the major issues of cooperation between Vietnam and Mongolia, including diplomatic, defence and security relations; economics, trade and investment; agriculture and disaster prevention; science and technology; transportation; education, culture, sports and tourism; labour, healthcare and various fields.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his spouse chaired a ceremony in Hanoi on August 8 to mark the 50th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and 22 years of Vietnam’s ASEAN membership.

The PM highlighted the achievements that ASEAN has gained over the past half century to become a strong and united community with rule-based operations and comprehensive and extensive connectivity across the fields, contributing to the maintenance of peace, stability, and cooperation in the region.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Dinh Quy and his Bangladeshi counterpart Md. Shahidul Haque co-chaired the first political consultation between Vietnam and Bangladesh, which took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on August 6.

The two sides agreed to accelerate the exchange of high-level visits and the Bangladeshi side expressed their wish to welcome President Tran Dai Quang for an official visit soon. Concerning the economic and investment sphere, they agreed to continuously facilitate their businesses’ market research and investment promotion, towards achieving the set two-way trade turnover goal of US$1 billion.

Over 500 enterprises attend international exhibition on food & beverages

The 21st international exhibition on food processing, packing technology and equipment (VietFood & Beverage - ProPack) opened at the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Centre in Ho Chi Minh City on August 9 with more than 500 enterprises present.

This year’s event, which will run until August 12, is showcasing nearly 600 pavilions run by enterprises from 20 different countries and territories, including the Republic of Korea, China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Poland to name only a few. The exhibition also witnessed the participation of a number of countries that attended for the first time, including the Czech Republic, Brazil, France, and the United Arab Emirates.

Vietnam formally launches derivatives market

The derivatives market has been officially launched in Vietnam in a move expected to fine-tune the country’s financial market and make it a major channel for providing medium and long-term funds for economic growth.

The launch on August 10 made Vietnam the fifth country in ASEAN, along with Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, and the 42nd country in the world to have a derivatives market. Vietnam’s equity and bond markets are currently equivalent to 80% GDP, with the equity market equal to 57% GDP and the bond market 24% GDP. The amount of funds mobilised through these markets make up about 23% of the total social investment.

Doctors at the HCM City University Medical Centre perform a laparoscopic liver surgery.

A research team from the University Medical Centre (UMC) Ho Chi Minh City has won the award for the best laparoscopic liver surgery video at the 1st World Congress of the International Laparoscopic Liver Society. The event was held in Paris last month.

This success has created a new milestone for the Vietnamese health sector in the field of laparoscopic liver surgery, acting as a driving force for the hospital to continue working towards the development of new techniques that will improve the chances of successful surgical operations..

Vietnam holds send-off for delegation to 29th SEA Games

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Nguyen Ngoc Thien presents the national flag to Tran Duc Phan, Head of the Vietnamese SEA Games delegation.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Nguyen Ngoc Thien encouraged each member of the Vietnamese sports contingent to effectively perform the role as an ambassador of Vietnam to the people of the Southeast Asian (SEA) countries.This encouragement was offered to the members of the sports contingent just before their departure to the 29th SEA games. .

The 29th SEA Games is scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 19 to 31, featuring a total of 404 disciplines across 38 different sports. Vietnam will send a delegation consisting of 681 members to participate in the event, with 476 athletes competing in 276 disciplines in 32 sports, with the aspiration of a top-three place in the overall medal tally.
