Party General Secretary tours Indonesia and Myanmar

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong successfully concluded his Indonesia and Myanmar tour on August 26, marking a new milestone and creating new momentum in reinforcing the political trust and boosting all-round cooperation between Vietnam and the two countries

During his stay in Indonesia, from August 22-24, the Party chief and the host country’s leaders discussed the necessary measures to boost their bilateral ties, affirming their determination to maintain their trustworthy friendship with shared values and interests. The two sides also signed six cooperation agreements.

While staying in Myanmar, from August 24-26, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Myanmar’s leaders reached orientations and solutions to beef up the ties comprehensively, while agreeing to continue working closely and supporting each other at international and regional frameworks.

On the occasion, the two sides issued a joint statement on the establishment of the Vietnam-Myanmar comprehensive partnership and signed a number of cooperation deals.

Vietnam Machinery and Wood Materials Fair took place in Binh Duong

The 2017 Vietnam Machinery and Wood Material Fair took place at Binh Duong Exhibition and Convention Center, Binh Duong province, on August 23 and 24.

The fair showcased 420 booths from 109 wood processing and supply businesses from Vietnam, China, Austria, Canada, France, Gabon, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Poland, Singapore, Switzerland and Turkey.

Products displayed at the Fair were mainly those of wood-processing machinery, wood materials and accessories used for wood processing and services.

APEC Food Security Week wraps up in Can Tho city

APEC Food Security Week wrapped up in Can Tho city on August 25 with its outcomes having contributed to materialising one of the four priorities of the APEC Year 2017, which is to enhance food security and sustainable development in response to climate change.

The Food Security Week brought together two ministers, seven deputy ministers and nearly 700 delegates from the APEC member economies, international organisations and research institutes.

The week featured 17 events, including high-level dialogues, annual meetings of the APEC working groups, symposiums, an exhibition and fact-finding trips. Bilateral meetings between the leaders in charge of the agricultural sectors of the APEC economies were also held during the week.

During the week, APEC member economies adopted three important documents - the Action Plan to implement the Multi-Year Framework Programme on Food Security and Climate Change, the Action Plan to implement the Strategic Framework on Rural-Urban Development to Strengthen Food Security and Quality Growth, and the Can Tho Statement on Enhancing Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Response to Climate Change.

Vietnam, UNESCO jointly establish maths, physics centres

Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) signed an agreement to establish two category 2 centres for mathematics and physics, on August 24.

They are postgraduate education centres for mathematics and physics which will help to implement basic science programmes as well as theoretical physics.

The signing of the pact will not only help Vietnam to boost its cooperation with member countries of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) but also with developed and developing nations in the world via the UNESCO network. It will also elevate the status of Vietnam’s scientific development, while contributing to the development of basic science in the region and the world.

Vietnam Migration Profile 2016 released

The Vietnam Migration Profile 2016 was released by the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Department and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in Hanoi on August 22.

The profile is part of a project on enhancing the cooperation among Vietnam’s relevant agencies involved in migration management, which has been carried out by the Consular Department and the IOM since 2015.

It includes updated data on Vietnam’s migration flows, analysis and assessment of migration facts and recommendations to improve the ministries and sectors’ migration management capacity, in addition to fine-tuning the relevant policies and laws and boosting cooperation among the state managerial agencies working in the field.

Vinh Phuc hosts 2017 ASEAN Song, Dance and Music Festival

The 2017 ASEAN Song, Dance and Music Festival was held at Vinh Phuc provincial theatre from August 20 to 24, as part of the activities to celebrate the 50th founding anniversary of ASEAN.

The festival featured nearly 300 artists from seven ASEAN member states, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The artists presented around 90 performances highlighting each nation’s culture.

The event was held to improve people’s knowledge of the ASEAN Community and increase their awareness of developing the community.

Vietnam International Exhibition and Fair opens in Hanoi

The sixth Vietnam International Book Exhibition and Fair – 2017 opened at Thong Nhat Park in Hanoi, on August 23, featuring the participation of 94 publishing houses from home and abroad, introducing almost 40,000 book titles.

The five-day fair was divided into various different themes, including books on islands, territories and sovereignty; books on ASEAN; translated books; e-books; books published through other materials; books honoured with State Awards, Ho Chi Minh Awards and others.

Notably, a special area at the fair will be arranged for the transaction, exchange, and buying and selling of copyrights, with the participation of numerous large copyright companies from Vietnam and the Southeast Asia region.

SEA Games 29: Vietnam rank third on day eight

Swimmer Anh Vien has possessed an amazing collection of eight individual gold medals in Kuala Lumpur.

Vietnam rank third place in the medal tally, as of August 27, the eighth day of competition at the on-going 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, with 53 gold, 38 silver and 50 bronze medals.

Malaysia remain on top with 96 gold, 64 silver and 63 bronze medals, followed by Thailand (54 gold, 71 silver and 68 bronze medals). Brunei was at the bottom of the list with 4 silver and 7 bronze medals, while Timor Leste has yet to win any medal.

Vietnam sent more than 470 athletes to compete at the Games from August 19-30. They are scheduled to take part in 32 out of 38 sports and are set to bring home 49-59 gold medals to rank in the top three.
