September 4-10: Egyptian President concludes Vietnam visit

NDO - Nhan Dan Online reviews a number of notable events that have made the headlines over the past week.

1. Egyptian President concludes Vietnam visit

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi concluded his two-day State visit to Vietnam on September 7, having obtained fruitful results.

During his meetings with the Vietnamese leaders, the two sides agreed to increase the exchange of delegations across all channels, concurred to work closely together to organise activities celebrating the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2018, and pledged to create optimal conditions for businesses on both sides in order to access the respective markets, aiming to raise two-way trade to US$1 billion in the future.

They emphasised their wishes and determination to maintain maritime order in accordance with the principles of international law laid down in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). On the occasion, both sides signed nine cooperation agreements in various fields and issued a joint statement on the visit.

2. Vietnam’s National Day marked in Laos, Belgium

The Vietnamese Embassies in Laos and Belgium held ceremonies, on September 4, to celebrate 72 years of Vietnam’s National Day (September 2, 1945-2017).

Addressing the functions, the Vietnamese ambassadors briefed their guests on the important milestones in Vietnam’s history, since the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945, whilst thanking the international friends for continuously supporting Vietnam.

3. Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia strengthen youth cooperation

The Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia Youth Cooperation Conference took place in Ho Chi Minh City on September 8, as part of the key activities held in celebration of the 40 years since the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Amity and Cooperation Treaty, 55 years of Vietnam-Laos diplomatic ties and 50 years of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic relations.

At the conference, over 30 senior youth delegates from the three countries discussed the measures required to improve youth education on the history of the traditional friendly relations and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and to also boost trade cooperation between the three countries’ young businesses. They also shared their experiences in supporting young people to begin their career in business and create startups, whilst debating the necessary solutions to improve the efficiency of youth cooperation in voluntary work.

4. Vietnam attends third Eastern Economic Forum

Politburo member Nguyen Van Binh, who is head of the Vietnamese Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission, attended the third Eastern Economic Forum, themed “The Russian Far East: Creating a New Reality”, in Vladivostok city, Russia, on September 6.

The event attracted the participation of almost 5,000 delegates, who are State leaders, entrepreneurs, experts and economists from 60 countries across the world.

In his remarks, Binh valued the positive changes that the Far East has achieved in recent years, noting that the Far East is a new economic centre of attraction, providing new conditions for conducting business, which will help Russia’s Far East to connect with other Asia-Pacific countries. He witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between Vietnam’s TH True Milk and Russia’s Far East Development Corporation.

5. International tourism fair opens in Ho Chi Minh City

The 13th International Travel Expo Ho Chi Minh City 2017 (ITE HCMC), themed ‘Your gateway to tourism in Asia’, took place at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre (SECC) in District 7 on September 7-9, gathering more than 700 international travel businesses from 40 countries and territories.

The event was one of the most important and prestigious tourism commerce forums in Vietnam and the region, contributing to advertising Vietnam’s tourism to international friends and accelerating the cooperation between countries in the region, and around the world, in developing the tourism industry.

6. Hanoi hosts Vietnam ICT Summit

The Vietnam ICT Summit 2017 took place in Hanoi on September 6, bringing together over 650 delegates who are in leadership positions at central government agencies, provincial authorities and leading IT firms, as well as foreign diplomats, from Vietnam and abroad.

Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam stressed the need to step up the application of information technology across all fields, while urging the IT firms to work closely with higher education institutions in order to train students in the requirements for their future jobs, so that the problem of Vietnam’s lack of highly-skilled IT workers could be resolved.

During the summit, participants focused their discussions on the trends, strategies and solutions for Vietnam to approach the fourth industrial revolution.

7. Students nationwide begin new academic year

More than 22 million school attendees at all education levels entered the new academic year of 2013-2014 on September 5, after opening ceremonies took place nationwide.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, in this school year, Vietnam has approximately 4.7 million preschool children, 15 million high-school students, 520,000 vocational students and 2.1 million undergraduates.

This academic year will be the first time that the country implements the Party Central Committee’s resolution on fundamental and comprehensive reform of education and training to meet the requirements of national industrialisation and modernisation in the context of developing a socialist-oriented market economy and furthering global integration.

8. PM congratulates trainers, athletes on SEA Games achievements

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and the outstanding trainers and athletes.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with and presented gifts to the outstanding trainers and athletes who returned from the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 29) in Malaysia, on September 5.

The Government leader congratulated the trainers and athletes on their achievements at the SEA Games 29, where they won 58 gold, 50 silver and 60 bronze medals, helping the Vietnamese sport delegation to fulfill the set target of ranking in the top three.

He asked the sporting sector to develop appropriate policies to improve athletes and coaches’ professional skills and actively seek young talents for training, in addition to pooling public resources for sport development, whilst urging agencies, sponsors and society as a whole to contribute to the development of sports in Vietnam.
