Various activities mark the 129th birth anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh

A wide range of activities have been held both at home and abroad to mark the 129th birth anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2019) and 50 years of implementing his Testament.

Exhibitions on the life and career of the President, seminars on the ideology and morality of President Ho Chi Minh, and art performances are among the notable events held to celebrate the President’s birthday.

Party Central Committee’s 10th plenum concludes

The 10th plenum of the 12th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam wrapped up in Hanoi on May 18, completing all items on the agenda after nearly three days of working.

In his closing speech, Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong said the meeting was a success as it touched on various topics, focusing on the preparations for all-level Party congresses, towards the 13th National Party Congress.

Most of the committee members agreed with the proposals presented by the Political Bureau, he said, adding that all the members consented to adopting the meeting’s resolution.

Vietnam named among fastest growing economies in 2020s: Standard Chartered

The 2020s are set to be the Asian decade, including Vietnam, with sustained growth rates of around 7%, according to Bloomberg.

The 7% growth rate means a doubling of gross domestic product (GDP) every 10 years. Standard Charter predicts that Vietnam’s per-capital income will surge to US$10,400 in 2030 from roughly US$2,500 in 2018.

World Bank to provide US$125 million for City’s urban development

Ho Chi Minh City is emerging as a global megacity.

The World Bank has approved to finance US$125 million to assist Ho Chi Minh City in strengthening the institutional foundations for its sustainable urban development.

This is the World Bank’s first budget support operation to a sub-national entity in Vietnam.

The programme aims to remove institutional bottlenecks to enable Vietnam’s largest city and economic powerhouse to address some of its most pressing urban governance challenges.

Vietnam bakes in new heatwave as temperatures hit 40C

A new heatwave hit Vietnam’s northern region with temperatures in some places having reached nearly 40C, according to the national weather service.

The hot weather was a result of the foehn effect, caused by a warm low-pressure in the west combined with southwest winds, stated the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

The heat became more intense from May 17-19 with highest temperatures at 36-39C across the northern and central regions.

The mercury is expected to drop to around 30C from May 20 this week.

PM requests entire political system to join combat against African swine fever

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has called for joint efforts of the entire political system in the fight against African swine fever (ASF), which has spread across 34 cities and provinces nationwide.

The PM underlined the responsibility of heads of concerned agencies in the combat and asked the agencies and localities to double efforts in ASF prevention and control.

The veterinary sector needs to monitor and support pig farms that are free from the virus in pork consumption, he said, adding that localities should update agencies and people on developments of the disease.

About 1.5 million pigs, or 5 percent of the country’s pig herds nationwide, have been culled since the first case of AWF was detected in the northern province of Hung Yen in February.

Glazed ceramic tower from Tro Pagoda recognised as national treasure

The provincial authorities of Vinh Phuc held a ceremony on May 16 to receive a certificate recognising the glazed ceramic tower from Tro Pagoda as a national treasure, raising the number of national treasures to 164.

Dated to the 14th century, the tower is currently being preserved at Vinh Phuc provincial Museum. Previously, it was a worshipping item at the ancient Tro pagoda in Dan Tru hamlet, Yen Phuong commune, Yen Lac district. The pagoda is believed to have been built between the Ly and Tran dynasties (11th-14th centuries).

The tower is decorated with patterns in various themes of dragons, Buddha, flowers and leaves, which are featured in sophisticated stamping and carving techniques, making it stand out among the collection of Vietnamese ceramic objects.

Vietnamese startup wins Startup World Cup 2019 Champion

Vietnamese startup Abivin, which provides AI-powered Supply Chain Optimisation, has been confirmed as the Startup World Cup 2019 Champion with an investment prize worth US$1 million.

Abivin, the only representative from Vietnam, surpassed candidates from more than 40 countries across the world to become the winner of the Startup World Cup 2019, which concluded in San Francisco on May 17.

Abivin is trained and matured by the Finland – Vietnam Innovation Partnership Programme Phase 2 (IPP2) and operated by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Chess star Le Quang Liem claims silver in IMSA Mind Games Rapid

Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem has produced a second-place finish in the rapid chess tournament at the IMSA Mind Games 2019, held from May 14-18 in China.

A second-place finish in the Mind Games has helped the Vietnamese chess ace to accumulate 30.4 additional rapid chess Elo points.

Korobov Anton was crowned the champion with 8.5 points, thus gaining 47.8 additional rapid Elo points.
