Top Cambodian legislator pays official visit to Vietnam

President of the Cambodian National Assembly Samdech Heng Samrin and his spouse paid an official visit to Vietnam from May 28-30 at the invitation of NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

During the visit, Heng Samrin held talks with NA Chairwoman Ngan, met Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Tran Quoc Vuong, and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Tran Thanh Man, visited the northern province of Ha Nam, and planted a tree at Tam Chuc tourism area in Kim Bang district.

On the occasion, the delegation laid wreaths at a monument dedicated to heroic martyrs and paid tribute to Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum.

Shangri-La Dialogue 2019 takes place in Singapore

The Shangri-La Dialogue 2019 was held in Singapore from May 31 to June 2 with six plenary dialogue sessions featuring the US’ vision on Indo-Pacific security; Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) security: next steps; Asia’s evolving security order and its challenges; China and international security cooperation; preventing conflicts in contested domains; and ensuring a resilient and stable region.

The Vietnamese delegation to the event was led by General Ngo Xuan Lich, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission and Minister of Defence.

Addressing the dialogue, Minister of Defence Ngo Xuan Lich affirmed Vietnam’s viewpoint and stance of solving disputes and preventing hostilities in the atmosphere of peace with the spirit of partnership and for the community responsibility.

Vietnam’s economy projected to grow 6.81% in 2019: report

According to a report released by the Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR), Vietnam’s economic growth is expected to reach 6.81% in 2019 and thereby meet the National Assembly’s target.

This is a highly likely scenario described by the think-tank, citing a strong momentum from 2018 and the government’s efforts to improve the competitiveness and productivity.

Da Nang international fireworks festival opens

The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival 2019, themed “Stories by the Rivers”, opened in the central city of Da Nang on June 1.

The opening ceremony witnessed the competition between hosts Da Nang - Vietnam and Fireworks Centre Khan from Russia, under which each team displayed approximately 20 minutes of fireworks.

The fireworks competitions between Brazil and Belgium, Finland and Italy, and the UK and China are scheduled to be held on June 8, June 15 and June 22, respectively..

The two best teams of the eight will compete on the final night, slated for July 6.

National Press Awards to honour 106 outstanding works

As many as 106 excellent works by journalists nationwide have won the 13th National Press Awards 2018.

Accordingly, seven journalism pieces have claimed the A prize, 23 works received the B prize, 42 works got the C prize, and 34 works were given the consolation prize.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held in Hanoi on June 21, marking the 94th anniversary of the Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day.

Phong Phu Ha Nam crowned Women’s National Cup champions

Phong Phu Ha Nam were crowned champions of the inaugural Women’s National Cup after edging out Hanoi FC 1-0 in the final match on May 31.

TNG Thai Nguyen claimed third place overall following their 2-1 victory over Son La.

Pham Thi Hai Yen of Hanoi FC was named as both the top scorer (six goals) and the best player of the tournament, while Lai Thi Tuyet of Phong Phu Ha Nam was voted as the best goalkeeper.

Vietnam welcomes nearly 7.3 million international visitors in five months

Vietnam welcomed and served nearly 7.3 million international visitors in the first five months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 8.8%.

In May alone, the number of foreign visitors to the country reached over 1.3 million, up 14.3% over the same period last year.
