Vietnam wins seat on UN Security Council for the second time
Vietnam has officially secured a seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a non-permanent member for the 2020-2021 tenure with a record number of votes.
Vietnam earned approval from 192 out of 193 voting countries and territories during a session at the UN General Assembly in New York on the morning of June 7 (local time).
With 15 members, including ten non-permanent ones, the UN Security Council is one of the six major UN subcommittees to be given the leading responsibility of maintaining international peace and security.
Italian Prime Minister pays official visit to Vietnam

Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, Giuseppe Conte, paid an official visit to Vietnam from June 5-6 at the invitation of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, helping to further deepen the Vietnam-Italy strategic partnership in the new situation.
During the visit, the Italian PM held talks with PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
Vietnamese and Italian PMs also co-chaired the third High-Level Dialogue on Italy-ASEAN Economic Relations in Hanoi on June 6, with the aim of creating more business opportunities between Italy and ASEAN member states.
National Assembly spends two and a half days questioning government officials
The question-and-answer (Q&A) session of the 14th National Assembly’s seventh sitting began on June 4 and concluded on June 6, during which four ministers and Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh were questioned.
Ministers of Public Security, Construction, Transport and Culture, Sports and Tourism answered questions at the Q&A session while Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, on behalf of the government, clarified related issues and directly answered questions of NA deputies.
First Overseas Vietnamese Economic Forum commences in RoK
The first Overseas Vietnamese Economic Forum (OVECOF) opened at the Songdo Convensia International Exhibition & Convention Centre in Incheon, the Republic of Korea (RoK), on June 7.
This is the first time OVECOF has been organised, with the participation of over 300 Vietnamese enterprises in the country and from 25 countries and territories around the world along with the participation of Korean businesses.
Taking place on June 7 and 8, the forum featured various activities to strengthen the connection between Vietnamese and Korean entrepreneurs. The highlight was a fair with about 50 booths introducing products from Vietnamese businesses from around the world.
Forbes Vietnam announces top 50 listed firms
Vietcombank becomes the champion in post-tax profit with a growth rate of 60%.
On June 3, Forbes Vietnam announced Vietnam’s 50 top listed companies for 2019. The firms accounted for 63% of total market capitalisation on the Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi stock exchanges in mid-May.
According to Forbes Vietnam’s seventh list of the country's top companies, the group of leading companies has shown impressive growth.
For three consecutive years, Vinamilk led the market in terms of profitability, but this time Vietcombank surpassed the dairy company, becoming the champion in post-tax profit with a growth rate of 60%.
Forbes Vietnam also noted the growth of private enterprises. Vingroup’s Vinhomes ranks second in the market in term of post-tax profit and is one of four companies with market capitalisation exceeding US$10 billion.
Nhan Dan wins two top prizes at External Information Service Awards
Nhan Dan Newspaper has won two first prizes at the 2018 External Information Service Awards for a series of articles on Vietnamese agricultural produce exports and another article on Vietnam’s peacekeeping forces.
The newspaper was also awarded two second place prizes for a long-form article on the US-China trade war and a collection of photos capturing the moment Vietnam won the Southeast Asian football tournament.
According to the organisers, the 2018 awards attracted approximately 1,000 entries in 13 languages divided into eight categories. Among the entries, the organisers selected 90 of the best works to award 8 first place prizes, 17 second place prizes, 25 third place prizes and 40 consolation prices.
Speaking at the awards ceremony on June 7, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc congratulated the winners while emphasising that the external information service helps to enhance the image of the Vietnamese country, culture and people in the eyes of international friends.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasised the need to take practical and concrete measures to control and reduce plastic waste while launching a national campaign on plastic waste prevention in Hanoi on June 9.
As much as 13 million tonnes of plastic trash are discharged into oceans each year, it has left negative impacts on the living environments, people’s health and the sustainable development of each nation, said PM Phuc.
Therefore, he asked competent ministries, agencies, sectors and localities to outline programmes and plans on phasing out the use of plastic products and work to realise the target of eliminating single-use plastic products in urban markets, convenience stores and supermarkets by 2021, and nationwide by 2025.
Vietnam finish as runners-up at King’s Cup after shootout loss against Curacao
Vietnam lost 4-5 against Curacao as forward Nguyen Cong Phuong missed from the spot in the penalty shootout in their 2019 King’s Cup final at Chang Arena in Buriram, Thailand, on June 8.
Failing to find the back of the net in the remainder of the final, the teams were sent to penalty shootout where Curacao managed five successful kicks, compared to Vietnam’s four, to claim the overall trophy.
Despite missing out on the title, Park Hang-seo’s side had a successful King’s Cup tournament with a convincing 1-0 victory over archrivals Thailand, and a brave final match against Curacao, who were higher rated with their better fitness and physique.
