Party General Secretary-President chairs Politburo meeting

Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong chaired a meeting of the Politburo on June 21 to approve personnel planning for the 13th Party Central Committee in the 2021-2026 tenure.

The meeting also considered personnel matters and disciplinary measures for some officials.

The Politburo approved the planning for the 13th Party Central Committee (2021-2026 tenure) and assigned the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Organisational Affairs to coordinate with related agencies, localities and organisations to conduct training and arrange work for officials listed in the planning, as part of personnel preparation for Party congresses at all levels, towards the 13th National Party Congress.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc joined other ASEAN leaders at the plenary session of the 34th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 22, to discuss orientations and measures to build a sustainable ASEAN Community for the people.

As Vietnam will assume the ASEAN Chair next year, PM Phuc delivered a speech at the plenum, highly evaluating the theme “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability” and the priorities proposed by Thailand during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2019.

On the sidelines of the summit, Vietnamese Prime Minister had separate meetings with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He also hosted a reception for leaders of Thai groups that have invested in Vietnam and visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand, where he spoke with its staff and representatives of the Vietnamese community.

Vietnam to take Presidency of Asian Payment Network

The National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (NAPAS) has become the President of the Asian Payment Network (APN) for 2020 at the recent 15th annual meeting of the network in Hanoi.

Payment organisations from 11 member nations of APN agreed to jointly build retail payment infrastructure for countries in the region.

The event focused on discussing ways to promote the transfer from bilateral connection to that through APN Hub, boost the implementation of Cross Border Fund Transfer – CBFT, and develop Cross Border QR and initiatives to support fintech and startup firms.

PM congratulates journalists on Revolutionary Press Day

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited veteran journalists in Ho Chi Minh City on June 18, ahead of the 94th Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925-2019).

PM Phuc said the Party and State acknowledge their dedication to the revolutionary press, which has contributed to national development and defence, expressing his hope that they will continue upholding the revolutionary spirit and make more contributions to the city and the country, while instilling the revolutionary press tradition into younger generations.

Various activities were also held across the nation to mark the occasion, including the presentation of the 2018 National Press Awards and the 2019 National Press Awards on Youth, and the launch of the 14th Journalism Award for the Cause of Great National Unity, among others.

Two Vietnamese universities keep places in world’s top 1,000

The Vietnam National University - Hanoi (VNU) and the Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) have been listed among the top 1,000 universities of 82 countries in the 2020 QS World rankings.

The VNU-HCM was among the 701st - 750th group for the second consecutive year, belonging in the top 66% of the world’s best universities. This year, the university’s Academic Reputation criteria jumped 70 places to the 427th spot. Meanwhile, VNU - Hanoi remained in the group for 801st - 1000th place.

In the QS World University Rankings, universities worldwide are evaluated according to the six metrics of Academic Reputation (40%), Employer Reputation (10%), Faculty/Student Ratio (20%), Citations per faculty (20%), International Faculty Ratio and International Student Ratio (5% each).

Vietnamese artist’s work on display at Chateau La Coste

Popular artist Tia Thuy Nguyen has become the first Vietnamese artist to display artwork at Chateau La Coste, France.

Titled ‘Silver Room’, Thuy’s work is a reflection of the common houses of ethnic minority groups in the central highlands region of Vietnam. The work incorporates silver gilding techniques of Vietnamese traditional lacquer art, carving techniques on quartz and jackfruit tree wood.

Thuy was born in 1981 in Hanoi. She now lives in Ho Chi Minh City. After her graduation from Vietnam Fine Arts University in 2006, she received a scholarship to study her MA and PhD at the Kiev Royal Art and Architecture Institute, Ukraine. In 2016, Tia Thuy Nguyen established The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre in Ho Chi Minh City.

National quality awards presented to 75 businesses

The Vietnam National Quality Awards 2018 were presented at a ceremony in Hanoi on June 23, honouring 75 companies with remarkable achievements in product and service quality and business performance.

Twenty-two of the firms won the golden prize of the Vietnam National Quality Awards 2018. The Vietnam National Quality Awards went to 53 other businesses, including 20 big production companies, 21 small- and medium-sized production companies, one big service company, and 11 small- and medium-sized service ones.

Also at the ceremony, the Global Performance Excellence Award 2018 (GPEA) was presented to the Binh Minh Plastic JSC and the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (VietinBank).

Vietnamese player wins gold medal at ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships

Vietnamese chess prodigy Nguyen Anh Khoi won the gold medal in the standard chess category at the 2019 ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships which is taking place from June 10-18 in Mandalay, Myanmar.

In addition, world U8 champion Nguyen Le Cam Hien impressively bagged a gold medal at the women’s U12 chess competition.

Vietnamese delegation also brought home an additional nine gold medals from the men’s U6, U8, U10, U12 and U16 categories as well as the women’s U10, U14, U16 and U20 events.
