Vietnamese NA leader successfully concludes China visit

Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and her entourage arrived in Hanoi on the evening of July 12, concluding their official visit to China at the invitation of the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Li Zhanshu.

During her five-day visit, Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan met with General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and President of China, Xi Jinping; held talks with the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Li Zhanshu; and met with the Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Wang Yang.

Chairwoman Ngan and her Chinese counterpart Li attended an art performance entitled “Friendship Bridge” within the framework of the Vietnamese Culture Days in China.

The top Vietnamese legislator visited Nanjing city and Suzhou city of Jiangsu province; received leaders of major Chinese groups; and visited the Zhongguancun Exhibition Centre in Beijing.

Chairwoman Ngan and her Chinese counterpart Li focused discussions on measures to effectively implement the cooperation agreement signed between the two legislatures in 2015.

Vietnam elected as APF Vice President

Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophone (APF)’s Vietnam Sub-Committee, Nguyen Thuy Anh, has been elected as APF Vice President for the 2019-2021 tenure.

Anh led a Vietnamese delegation to the APF’s 45th session and related meetings in Abidjan city,the Ivory Coast, from July 4-9.

Amadou Soumahoro, President of the Ivory Coast National Assembly, was elected as APF’s President.

National ASEAN 2020 Committee holds third meeting

On July 9, the National ASEAN 2020 Committee held its third session under the chair of Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh, who is also the chairman of the committee.

Deputy PM Minh approved the direction of work from now to the committee’s fourth session, which is slated for September, along with the calendar for a number of main events in 2020.

White Book on Vietnamese Businesses 2019 launched

The first edition of the White Book on Vietnamese Businesses was launched at a ceremony in Hanoi on July 10.

The White Book, compiled by the General Statistics Office under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, contains essential information assessing the development of enterprises across the country and in localities in the period from 2016 to 2018.

The book also honours enterprises with outstanding contributions to economic development in the country and each locality.

Vietnam Summer Camp 2019 opens

On July 12, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the People’s Committee of the northern province of Thai Nguyen held a ceremony to begin the Vietnam Summer Camp 2019.

The camp is being attended by 155 participants from 28 countries, representing youths with outstanding achievements in study, sports and arts who make considerable contributions to the building of the overseas Vietnamese community.

The camp includes various activities in 10 localities throughout Vietnam, including paying respect to late President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum in Hanoi, visiting his birthplace in Nghe An province, and visiting the Truong Son cemetery of fallen soldiers in Quang Tri province, among others.

Vietnamese representative elected as AWG Chairman

Dr. Le Van Tuan, Deputy Director of the Authority of Radio Frequency Management under the Ministry of Information and Communications, has been elected as Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Wireless Group (AWG) for the 2019-2022 term.

The election, which took place during the 25th meeting of the AWG in Indonesia from July 1-5, demonstrates the international community’s acknowledgement of Vietnamese experts’ experience in radio communication.

This is the first time a Vietnamese representative has been elected to the position. Previously, Vietnam held the role of Vice Chair of the AWG for 2014-2019.

Ceremony marks 20 years of Hanoi receiving ‘City for Peace’ title

A ceremony was held in the capital city of Hanoi on July 13 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its recognition as ‘City for Peace’ by UNESCO (July 16).

Twenty years ago, Hanoi was honoured by UNESCO with the title at a ceremony held in La Paz, the capital city of Bolivia. So far, Hanoi remains the only capital in Asia-Pacific to receive the recognition.

On the occasion, the municipal leaders and UNESCO representative pressed the button to inaugurate the website “Hanoi - Creative City”.

Grandmaster Le Quang Liem wins 2019 World Open

Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem won the World Open chess tournament which concluded in Philadelphia, the US, on July 8, re-entering him into the world's top 30 chess players.

After nine matches, Liem, with an Elo rating of 2,713, was tied for first with 7.5 points alongside American Jeffery Xiong (Elo 2,691).
