Party, State leader meets outstanding trade union leaders, officials

Party General Secretary and President Nguyen PhuTrong met with 90 outstanding leaders of local trade unions in 2019 and 10 trade union officials receiving Nguyen Van Linh Awards in Hanoi on July 20.

The Nguyen Van Linh Award, the first of its kind organised by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL), aims to honour trade union officials who had effective, creative initiatives and solutions to improve trade union operations, benefiting labourers.

At the meeting, the Party and State leader highly valued positive contributions of workers’ movements and trade unions across the country over the years.

NA Standing Committee opens 35th session

The National Assembly Standing Committee opened its 35th session under the chair of NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

The 2.5-day session focused on four law projects which have received mixed opinions of the deputies as well as gave opinions on the evaluation of the outcomes of the NA’s 7th session, preparation for the 8th session, plan to build the e-NA project, and others.

Vietnam up three places in SDG Index 2019

Vietnam ranked 54th in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index 2019, with 71.1 points, moving up three steps from the 2018 position, according to a report issued by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Bertelsmann Stiftung.

Denmark ranked top with 85.2 points and the Central African Republic was placed at the bottom with 39.1 points.

Two Vietnamese among top 100 scientists in Asia

Prof. Dr Nguyen Thanh Liem and Dr Nguyen Thi Hiep have been listed among the top 100 scientists in Asia recently released by Singapore’s Asian Scientist magazine.

Nguyen Thanh Liem is the former Director of the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital and is currently Director of the Vinmec Research Institute of Stem Cell and Gene Technology.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Hiep is a lecturer at International University under the Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnamese students get medals at 2019 International Biology Olympiad

The four Vietnamese students participating in the 2019 International Biology Olympiad in Hungary have brought home one silver and three bronze medals.

The silver medal was won by Hoang Minh Trung from Lam Son High School for Gifted Students in the central province of Thanh Hoa.

Vietnam wins two golds, four silvers at International Mathematics Olympiad

Six Vietnamese high school students won medals, two gold and four silver, in the 2019 International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO).

The achievements placed Vietnam in seventh position out of 110 teams participating in the 2019 IMO (the 60th of its kind).

The gold medals were claimed by Nguyen Nguyen, from the High School for the Gifted under the Ho Chi Minh City National University, and Nguyen Thuan Hung, from Tran Phu High School for the Gifted in Hai Phong City.

“Tinh Hoa Bac Bo” show named top outdoor cultural spectacle in 2019

The Vietnamese live entertainment show “Tinh Hoa Bac Bo” (the Quintessence of Tonkin) was honoured as the top cultural spectacle in 2019 at the Best Hotels & Resorts Awards 2019 held in Seoul, the Republic of Korea.

The entertainment show has been presented with a number of records and international awards, and also recommended by CNN as a must-see show when visiting Hanoi.

Thien Duong Cave sets Asian record for unique stalactites, stalagmites

Thien Duong (Paradise) Cave in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, in the central province of Quang Binh, has been recognised as having the most unique and magnificent system of stalactites and stalagmites in Asia.

The Asia Book of Records’ certificate was presented at the opening ceremony of the fourth Quang Binh Cave Festival in Dong Hoi City on July 20.

Vietnam comes third at Asian Women’s U23 Volleyball Championship

The Vietnamese team brought home the bronze medal at the Asian Women’s U23 Volleyball Championship – Dong Luc Cup – after defeating Thailand 3-1 at Hanoi’s Gia Lam Gymnasium on July 21.

In the final, China earned a victory over the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to take the title.
