European Parliament ratifies EVFTA and EVIPA
The EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) have been ratified by the European Parliament.
The EVIPA was passed with 407 votes for, 188 against and 53 abstentions; and the EVFTA, with 401, 192 and 40, respectively.
The EVFTA will enter into force after being adopted by the Vietnamese Assembly while the EVIPA will take effect after consent by the national parliaments of EU member countries.
National Assembly Standing Committee convenes 42nd session

The National Assembly Standing Committee held its 42nd session on February 10 and 11 in Hanoi.
The session investigated contentious contents of the draft laws amending and supplementing some articles of the Law on Settlement of Administrative Violations and the Law on Organisation of the National Assembly.
Other issues tabled for consideration included preparations for Vietnam’s ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Chairmanship 2020 and the rearrangement of administrative units at communal and district levels in six centrally run cities and provinces.
Vietnam effectively controls Covid-19 spread
Vietnam has implemented measures against the spread of the novel coronavirus well (Covid-19), with the most important work focused on supervision and quarantine, according to Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam.
Vietnam hasn’t recorded many numbers of infections, with only 16, while treatment for those infected with the deadly virus has been positive. Seven patients among the 16 cases have already recovered and were discharged from hospital.
The Ministry of Health has affirmed that district-level clinics have received training and necessary medical equipment to ensure they can diagnose and treat Covid-19 infections.
The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has conducted three flights to take Chinese citizens home in accordance with their wishes.
Vietnamese professor awarded 2020 Sloan Research Fellowship

Professor Vu Ngoc Tam, the only Vietnamese to be honoured with a 2020 Sloan Research Fellowship.
Vu Ngoc Tam, a young Vietnamese professor working at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder, USA, has been honoured as a 2020 Sloan Research Fellowship recipient.
The 1983-born Vietnamese professor was honoured for computer science within the list of 126 winners announced by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation on February 12.
As the founder and CEO of the Earable Inc., Tam’s honour to be granted the 2020 Sloan Research Fellowship in recognition of his scientific research in wearable and wireless technology, focusing on the invention of devices that help aid and improve the quality of human health and life.
Vietnamese lifter wins six golds, breaks world record at Asian youth & junior championships
Vietnamese lifter Do Tu Tung swept up six gold medals and broke a world record in the boys’ 55kg weight class at the ongoing 2020 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
In the snatch event, Tung competed against his compatriot Dac Tri and Ogabek of the host country. The 2004-born athlete was successful with all the three attempts and achieved the best lift of 110kg.
The result not only earned Tung a gold medal but also helped him to break the world youth & junior record set by Italy’s Massidda Sergio in October 2019, exceeding it by 1kg.
Tung continued to top the clean & jerk competition with a lift of 136kg, which allowed him to complete a hat-trick of titles in the boys’ 55kg category with a total lift of 246kg.
As Tung had registered to compete in both the youth and junior events, he eventually brought home six gold medals for Vietnam overall. Meanwhile, teammate Dac Tri secured a silver in the youth discipline.
Vietnamese firms join international tourism fair in Israel

Vietnamese travel enterprises introduced their products at the 25th International Mediterranean Tourism Market (IMTM) which took place in Israel from February 11-12.
IMTM is an official and unique fair on trade and tourism held annually in Israel, aiming to create exchange opportunities between local and foreign tourism firms.
This year’s event attracted businesses from more than 40 countries and territories with nearly 265 booths.
