Top leader chairs 18th session of Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption
The fight against corruption in the recent times has not been stagnant or slack but has grown increasingly drastic and effective, General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong said at the 18th session of the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption in Hanoi on July 25.
A report at the event noted that in the first half of 2020, aside from major achievements in the COVID-19 combat, economic development, and social and foreign affairs, the Party building and the corruption fight continued to receive support and high evaluation from the people, officials and Party members, proving that this fight has become stronger and more drastic.
The leader stated that corruption combat has almost become a movement and an irresistible trend and emphasised that the committee is determined not to slacken but rather to strengthen this combat so as to deter corruption.

Various activities have been held across the country over the past week to commemorate and express gratitude to heroic martyrs, wounded soldiers, and revolutionary contributors.
A gathering was held in the capital city of Hanoi on July 25 for over 300 Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, representing nearly 5,000 surviving mothers around the country in the presence of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
Senior leaders, organisations, and people nationwide also visited and presented gifts to Heroic Vietnamese mothers, war invalids, relatives of martyrs and revolutionary contributors.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern agreed to formally elevate the two countries’ relations to strategic partnership during their virtual talks on July 22.
The strategic partnership was set up amid the 45th founding anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties as well as the positive and sustainable development of the comprehensive partnership founded in 2009, and based on the common interest and vision and the growing mutual trust between the two nations.
The two PMs voiced their belief that the new partnership will create momentum for bilateral relations to continue growing in an increasingly effective manner in all spheres, for the sake of the two peoples and for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Gold prices in Vietnam jump past VND55 million per tael
Domestic gold prices shot up above VND55 million (US$2,388) per tael on July 24 in tandem with global prices of the precious metal.
Experts said that domestic increases were greater than the global rally due to a limited supply as Vietnam has not imported any gold in recent years.
According to Vietnamese experts, the current demand for gold is not high, but amid global developments, some domestic gold trading companies are raising their selling prices to reduce risk when buying back.

European businesses are more positive about Vietnam’s trade and investment environment in the first few months after COVID-19, the Business Climate Index (BCI) unveiled by the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham) on July 22 showed.
After the Government implemented a world-leading public-health and economic response, Vietnam was able to return to business-as-usual much sooner than other countries, who continue to struggle with the impact of the virus.
As a result, the positive sentiment of European business leaders began to bounce back, recording a 7% jump between February and April to reach 34%.
The BCI also found that more than 25% of European enterprises have benefitted from the Government’s postponement of tax, while around one-in-five have benefitted from a reduction in rent and a suspension of social insurance contributions.
First COVID-19 community infections in 99 days confirmed
A Da Nang man was confirmed as Vietnam’s 416th Covid-19 patient on July 25, breaking the streak of more than three months without a local transmission.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc called for a calm approach in dealing with new coronavirus developments at a meeting on the same day, noting that the news is not welcome but calm is needed to take appropriate measures to control the situation and prevent further community infection.
Besides aggressive efforts to curb the virus in Da Nang, PM Phuc also called for strict border controls to block illegal immigration and requested the continued distribution of information about prevention measures so that the public can protect themselves.
Duc Tuan and My Trang win men’s and women’s singles events at Nhan Dan Table Tennis Championships

Nguyen Duc Tuan and Mai Hoang My Trang were crowned as the respective men’s and women’s singles champions at the 38th Nhan Dan Newspaper National Table Tennis Championships (2020) following their dramatic final wins at Ho Xuan Huong Gymnasium in Ho Chi Minh City on the evening of July 19.
Duc Tuan has become the third player from Hai Duong to take the men’s singles crown at the national championships over the past two decades, following Vu Manh Cuong and Doan Ba Tuan Anh.
Concluding the tournament, Mai Hoang My Trang steered hosts HCM City to four gold medals in different categories, including the women’s team, the women’s doubles, the mixed doubles, and the women’s singles events.
