National mourning held for former Party leader Le Kha Phieu

Vietnam observed two national days of mourning for former General Secretary of the Party Central Committee Le Kha Phieu from August 14-15 at the National Funeral Hall in Hanoi, Thong Nhat Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and 25B Hall in the late leader’s hometown of Thanh Hoa.

The Vietnamese Embassies abroad also held respect-paying services and opened books of condolences in commemoration of the former Party chief.

Leaders of countries and political parties offered their condolences to leaders of the Vietnamese Party and State, people and the family of the Vietnamese former Party leader over his passing away.

Former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu was born on December 27, 1931, in Dong Khe Commune, Dong Son District, the north-central province of Thanh Hoa. He passed away at 2.52am on August 7 at his home in Hanoi after a period of illness.

NA Standing Committee convenes 47th meeting

The 47th meeting of the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee opened in Hanoi on August 10.

The three-day meeting focused on debating a draft of the revised Law on Residence; a draft law on amendments and supplementations to a number of articles in the Law on the Handling of Administrative Violations; a draft of the revised Vietnam Border Guard Law; a draft of the revised Law on Environmental Protection; a draft law on amendments and supplementations to a number of articles in the Law on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control; and a draft revised ordinance on preferential treatment for revolutionary contributors.

Members of the committee also gave opinions on the issuance of a decree on the management and use of defence land for military production and economic development; a strategy for the development of State Audit to 2030; and a report on three years of implementing Resolution No 42/2017/QH14 on the pilot handling of bad debts of credit institutions.

VNPOLY becomes raw fibre supplier for Adidas and Target

The DTY yarn produced by the Vietnam Petrochemical and Fiber Joint Stock Company (VNPOLY) and its partner has passed rigorous quality checks from customers who are the two main material suppliers of the Adidas Group and Target Group in Vietnam.

As many as 437 tonnes of VNPOLY-produced yarn have recently been provided to the abovementioned enterprises for the production of high quality textile products.

The two main material suppliers of Adidas and Target in Vietnam are scheduled to maintain regular orders with VNPOLY and import about 50 tonnes of fibre per week. In addition, a number of other customers in high-end segments also plan to buy yarn produced by VNPOLY with orders of 45-70 tonnes of DTY yarn per month.

Vietnamese high-school students complete graduation exam amid coronavirus resurgence

Vietnamese high-school students finished a two-day examination on August 10, the results of which will be used to determine their eligibility to graduation from high schools and entrance to universities and colleges.

With 2029 testing venues, the Ministry of Education and Training mobilised nearly 7,000 staff from universities and colleges throughout the country to supervise the exam.

Taking place amid the resurgence of the coronavirus, testing venues were sprayed with disinfectants prior to the exam day while students were required to wear masks at all times during the exams. Testing sites were also equipped with body thermometers, basic medications, sanitisers and soaps while free medical masks were freely distributed to examinees and invigilators at many localities.

456 COVID-19 patients in Vietnam fullly recovered as of August 16

As many as 456, or 47.3%, of the total number of COVID-19 patients in Vietnam have fully recovered as of August 16, according to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.

On the same day, the country reported another 11 COVID-19 cases, taking the national count to 962. Eight of the new patients are in central Da Nang City, one in the capital city of Hanoi and two who came on repatriation flights into the country.

A total of 107,642 people are currently being quarantined at hospitals, concentrated quarantine facilities and their homes.

So far, 24 people have lost their lives due to COVID-19-related complications.

International Youth Day 2020 marked in Hanoi

International Youth Day 2020, themed “Vietnam we want in 2030: The youth act for a clean environment”, was marked during a ceremony in Hanoi on August 12.

Co-organised by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU) and the United Nations in Vietnam, the event was expected to affirm the youth’s role in offering measures related to climate change, environmental protection and plastic waste management.

On the occasion, the Vietnamese youth called for everyone to participate in keeping the environment clean and safe from pollution and to practice sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyles.

Make-in-Vietnam blockchain platform debuts

The Ministry of Information and Communications, on August 13, held a ceremony to debut the akaChain blockchain platform, as part of a programme introducing “Make in Vietnam” digital platforms.

The akaChain, developed by Vietnam’s largest tech firm FPT Software corporation, supports enterprises in quickly building their business network systems and distributed applications using blockchain technology. It helps shortening the time spent on a number of tasks like electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC), credit scoring, customer loyalty programmes, and origin tracing.

In the coming time, it will be further developed for strengthened security and transparency.

Exhibition honours Uncle Ho’s role in establishment of Democratic Republic of Vietnam

An exhibition, themed “President Ho Chi Minh - the founder of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam”, was held at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi on August 11 as part of the activities to mark the 75th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Independence (September 2).

On display are nearly 100 photos, documents and publications highlighting President Ho Chi Minh’s great contribution to the revolutionary cause.

The exhibits are divided into three parts entitled: “Nguyen Ai Quoc returning to the fatherland and directly leading people to fight for independence”; “Ho Chi Minh – the founder of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam”; and “Activities marking national independence”.
