Party Central Committee convenes 13th plenum
The 13th session of the 12th Party Central Committee opened in Hanoi on October 5 under the chair of Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong.
During the five-day session, the committee raised the spirit of responsibility, discussed all issues in a democratic and frank manner and contributed many intellectual opinions to the various reports and projects, including the economic situation in 2020 and the plan for 2021; draft documents for the 13th National Party Congress; and a personnel plan for the 13th Party Central Committee.
The committee also worked to complete draft documents for submission to the 13th National Party Congress, introduced potential candidates for the positions of Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Health, and studied many major issues.

A string of activities was held across the capital city of Hanoi over the past week to celebrate the 1010th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi and the 66th anniversary of the capital city's Liberation Day (October 10, 1954-2020).
Joyful cultural and arts events were staged at the pedestrian area around Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi on October 10, followed by a ceremony held by Hanoi City’s authorities at King Ly Thai To Flower Garden that evening.
Winners of the 13th Bui Xuan Phai – For Love of Hanoi Awards were also honoured during a ceremony held in Hanoi on October 7 with Music composer Phu Quang earning the Grand Prize.
Vietnam to enjoy fastest GDP growth in Asia by 2021: HSBC
Vietnam’s economy is set to rebound strongly by 8.1% in 2021, the fastest growth rate in Asia, as stated by HSBC in its recent economic research report entitled “Asia Economics: It’s about stamina”, which predicts the resilience of Asian economies against the COVID-19 epidemic.
According to the report, thanks to efforts to control the first COVID-19 wave, in the first six months this year, Vietnam has managed to record a growth rate of 1.8%.
Economic activities are recovering strongly, especially through the resumption of commercial flights. Therefore, HSBC expects that Vietnam's GDP growth rate will reach 2.6% in 2020, making the country the only ASEAN economy forecasted to have positive growth this year.
By 2021, HSBC forecast that Vietnam would benefit from the global recovery and attract FDI inflows. HSBC expects Vietnam's economic growth in 2021 to reach 8.1% (down from the previously forecast of 8.5%).
Nation’s largest coach station opened to public in HCM City

The new Mien Dong (Eastern) Bus Station in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 9 was officially put into operation on October 10 after nearly four years of construction.
The project, the largest of its kind in Vietnam, was invested in by the Saigon Transportation Mechanical Corporation, Ltd. (Samco) in phase 1.
As the replacement for the old and overloaded Mien Dong Station in the city’s inner Binh Thanh District, the new complex covers over 16 hectares with the main bus station area being combined with accompanying utility services. Its central station has four floors and two basements, with a total area of about 49,680 m2. Its inter-provincial parking lots cover 27,660m2, offering parking spaces for about 250 coaches.
The new station will meet the daily travel demand of about 21,000 passengers with 1,200 vehicles departing per day and can be expand to 52,000 passengers and over 1,800 buses departing per day during peak holidays.
Unique architecture of Vietnamese communal houses introduced in Germany
A photo exhibition entitled “Vietnamese communal house” was opened in Berlin on October 8, featuring the unique architecture of ancient village communal houses through the lens of architect-photographer Tran Trung Hieu.
The exhibition was organised by the Vietnamese Embassy in Germany and the iKARUS socio-cultural centre in Lichtenberg, Berlin, on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Vietnam-Germany diplomatic ties (1975-2020).
The event displays a selection of photos taken by architect-photographer Tran Trung Hieu, a member of the Vietnamese Communal House group, with the aim of introducing the unique culture and architecture of Vietnam to the German people.
The exhibition is also expected to promote the idea of building a Vietnamese Garden at the Gardens of the World (Garten der Welt) in Berlin.

With a score of 92.12 points, Vietnam has ranked ninth in a list of the world’s 20 favourite countries compiled by the US’s prestigious travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler.
Awards were voted by readers of CNTraveler in the categories of Favorite Country, Best City, Best Resort and Best Resort Island.
CNTraveler stated that the names in the 33rd Readers' Choice Awards 2020 are the ones that brought visitors comfort, that they still connected with long afterwards, and that got visitors through the months without travel. These are the enduring gems that can withstand the test of time and the vicissitudes of circumstances.
There are four ASEAN countries in the list of the world’s 20 favourite countries in 2020 of CNTraveler. Along with Vietnam, the remaining three ASEAN countries are Indonesia (ranked sixth with 92.98 points), Thailand (seventh with 92.62 points), and Malaysia (15th with 90.86 points).
