The Prime Minister was fortunate to escape death. According to Iraq’s military, he is now in good condition and suffered no injury.
On his official Twitter account, Iraq’s PM also confirmed that he is currently safe and called for restraint. However, the attack has wounded six members of his protection force.
Although no individual or group has claimed responsibility, the high-tech attack targeting the Iraqi head of government has rocked the international community. His office decried the “cowardly attack” at the Prime Minister Kadhimi’s residence, regarding it as a serious targeting of the Iraqi state.
The international community has expressed outrage over the attack. The US government condemned that attack and called it an “apparent act of terrorism”. US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price stated that this act of terrorism was directed at the heart of the Iraqi state and that they were relieved to learn that the Iraqi leader was unharmed.
Washington is also in close touch with the Iraqi security forces and has offered to assist in investigating the attack. Iran and Pakistan have also voiced their condemnation of the attack and are supporting Baghdad in conducting a thorough investigation.
Saudi Arabia said the attack was a "cowardly terrorist act". Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi spoke over the phone with Iraqi PM Kadhimi and wished security, stability and peace for all the Iraqi people.
When Iraqis are gradually returning to normal life and cooperation between Baghdad and regional countries are progressing, the assassination attempt at Prime Minister Kadhimi threatens to undermine Iraq’s stability and throw the Middle East into an abyss of instability.
