The ministry will launch a series of measures to better manage the supply of fruits next year, said Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit during a meeting on October 7 with agriculture and trade related agencies, as well as representatives of local farmers, exporters and logistics service providers.

Measures will focus on boosting distribution, local consumption, online and in-person sales, connecting businesses, improving the potential of farmers and exporters, and controlling prices fruits, Jurin said.

Thailand's fruit supply is expected to increase to 3.5 million tonnes next year, up 8 percent year-on-year.

Phusit Rattanakul Sereeruengrit, Director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) recently said that China is Thailand's largest fruit importer, accounting for more than 83 percent of the country's fresh fruit export volume.

The demand for importing fresh fruits from Thailand of other markets such as Hong Kong (China), Vietnam, Malaysia and the republic of Korea also tends to increase.

Phusit said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 could be a "golden year" for Thai fruit exporters thanks to efforts made by the Ministry of Commerce to organise trade promotion fairs.
