Laos, Cambodia still see complicated developments of COVID-19

The number of COVID-19 infections detected in the community in Laos remains high, while Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh has tightened pandemic prevention measures.

The Lao Ministry of Health confirmed 566 new cases of COVID-19 and two deaths on October 13, bring its total caseload and death toll to 29,964 and 35, respectively.

Of the new infections, 557 were detected in the community.

To date, more than 41 percent of the Lao population have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccines, while the rate of fully vaccinated citizens has surpassed 30 percent.

Meanwhile, in Cambodia, Mayor of Phnom Penh Khuong Sreng issued a directive to tighten regulations on COVID-19 prevention and control.

Accordingly, those who do not have a certificate of vaccination against COVID-19 are prohibited from going to public places such as schools, markets, and businesses in 14 districts in the capital city.

Cambodia has so far recorded a total of 115,607 cases of COVID-19, including 109,296 recoveries and 2,559 deaths.

As of October 12, nearly 12 million people out of its 16-million population have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
