Ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) vowed in Siem Riep on Wednesday (October 9) to work together towards a haze-free region, according to a joint statement. The statement was released after the ministers responsible for the environment, and for land, forest fires and haze, from ASEAN member states concluded their two-day meeting on environment and transboundary haze pollution control.

* Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the second informal meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and pay a state visit to Nepal from October 11 to 13.

* The Republic of Korea's trade ministry said Thursday that its director general-level official will hold trade talks with his Japanese counterpart this week in Switzerland over Japan's export curbs on RoK, which caused trade spat and led Seoul to file a complaint against Tokyo with the World Trade Organization (WTO).

* Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed Ankara's military operation in northern Syria over the phone, the Kremlin said Wednesday.

* The Arab League (AL) announced that it will hold an emergency meeting at the level of foreign ministers on October 12 to discuss the recent offensive launched by Turkey in northern Syria, the Cairo-based pan-Arab body said on October 9. The meeting will be held in response to a request from Egypt supported by several Arab states.

* US President Donald Trump on Wednesday called the Turkish military operation in northern Syria "a bad idea," while defending his decision to withdraw US troops from the region.

* Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok on Wednesday urged Turkey to stop its military offensive against the Kurdish forces in northern Syria, which was launched earlier in the day. He said he had summoned Turkey's ambassador to condemn the attack.

* The military operation launched by the Turkish army in Syria poses a direct threat to the security and stability in the region, Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

* Egyptian and Palestinian prime ministers accompanied by several senior ministers of both sides held intensive talks in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Wednesday over boosting bilateral ties.

* Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi Wednesday said that he will ask the parliament on October 10 to vote for a cabinet reshuffle as part of his reforms following a wave of anti-government protests over unemployment, corruption and lack of public services.

* King Mohammed VI of Morocco on Wednesday approved a reshuffle in the government of Prime Minister Saad Dine El Othmani. The new cabinet is composed of 23 ministers. Seven of them are technocrats, and the others represent five political parties let by the Justice and Development Party.
