Syrian army adheres to truce in Idlib, braces for operation in Aleppo

The Syrian army has observed the recently established truce in Idlib province for the third consecutive day and is preparing for an operation to retake key road leading to Aleppo, the pro-government al-Watan newspaper reported Wednesday (January 15).

Calm has prevailed the battlefields in the southeastern countryside of Idlib province in northwestern Syria save for intermittent shelling on the outskirts of Maarat al-Numan city in that part of the country.

The army shelled the outskirts of Maarat al-Numan in retaliation for a bombardment carried out by the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, said the newspaper.

The current truce has been recently established by Turkey and Russia.

Meanwhile, al-Watan reported that calm prevails the countryside of Aleppo province, noting that it's the "clam that precedes the storm" as the Syrian army is bracing to launch an assault to retake the road connecting Hama province with Aleppo, which passes through Idlib.

It said the imminent military operation aims to secure the Hama-Aleppo road as part of an agreement reached in Russia's Sochi in 2018 that aims to secure the official road to Aleppo, which extends all the way south to the capital Damascus.

Since the Hama-Aleppo road is under rebel control, people have traveled to Aleppo through another extension of the road.

The army is now prioritizing the recapture of the entire road between Hama and Aleppo, which will enable the travel movement to return to its pre-war time from Damascus in the south to Aleppo in the north without rerouting to other roads.
