Three Katyusha rockets landed in the "perimeter" of Baghdad International Airport on Wednesday (May 6), the Iraqi military said. The military said it found a rocket launcher with a timer in a rural area in western Baghdad, and there were no reported damages or casualties. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

* China reported 2 new coronavirus cases for May 5 and 20 new asymptomatic cases, data from the national health authority showed on Wednesday. China's total number of coronavirus cases now stands at 82,883, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,633, the National Health Commission said in a statement.

* The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday (May 5) reported 1,171,510 cases of the new coronavirus, an increase of 19,138 cases from its previous count, and said the number of deaths had risen by 823 to 68,279. The CDC reported its tally of cases of the respiratory illness known as COVID-19, caused by a new coronavirus, as of 4 p.m. ET on May 4, compared with its count a day earlier.

* The number of new coronavirus cases in Russia rose by 10,559 over the past 24 hours, bringing the nationwide tally to 165,929, the coronavirus crisis response centre said on Wednesday. It was the fourth consecutive day that cases had risen by more than 10,000. It also reported 86 new fatalities from COVID-19, bringing the total death toll in Russia to 1,537.

* The number of coronavirus infection cases in India reached 49,391, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday morning. This includes 33,514 active cases, and 1,694 deaths due to the COVID-19 infection so far.

* Malaysia reported 45 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, taking the cumulative total to 6,428 infections. The health ministry also reported one new death, raising the total number of fatalities from the outbreak to 107.

* The Philippines' coronavirus infections have broken past the 10,000 mark, the health ministry said on Wednesday. In a bulletin, the health ministry reported 320 additional infections, bringing the total to 10,004. It also reported 21 new deaths, bringing the toll to 658. But 98 patients have recovered, bringing total recoveries to 1,506.

* Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered ministers in his cabinet on Wednesday to use "whatever means" necessary to ensure the country's infection curve of the coronavirus outbreak goes down in May, to reach a low in cases by July.

* Singapore's health ministry on Wednesday confirmed 788 new coronavirus cases, taking the city-state's tally to 20,198.

* Germany's federal government and 16 states have agreed all shops and some sports can restart under certain conditions, schools will gradually open for all pupils and states will each decide on reopening restaurants, hotels and gyms, a document showed. Germany has been more successful than other large European countries in slowing the virus' spread. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases has increased by 947 to 164,807, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Wednesday. The reported death toll rose by 165 to 6,996.

* Japan's capital of Tokyo reported 38 cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, Jiji news agency said, marking a fifth straight day of declining numbers of new infections. Prime Minister Abe Shinzo on Monday extended a nationwide state of emergency to May 31, saying the infection rate had yet to drop enough to justify ending measures.

* The United Kingdom has drawn up a three-stage plan to ease the coronavirus lockdown that was first imposed at the end of March, The Times newspaper said. The government must review the lockdown by May 7 but Prime Minister Boris Johnson has made clear that he is worried about triggering a second deadly spike in cases. Johnson is expected to set out a plan for exiting the lockdown on May 10.

* The United States and Britain launched formal negotiations on a free trade agreement on Tuesday, vowing to work quickly to seal a deal that could counter the massive drag of the coronavirus pandemic on trade flows and the two allies' economies. The talks, to be conducted virtually, will involve over 300 US and UK staff and officials in nearly 30 negotiating groups, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and UK trade minister Liz Truss said in a joint statement.

* Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia will open their borders to each others' citizens from May 15, Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins said on Tuesday.

* China will expand its funding if needed to support the United Nations initiative to speed up the development of vaccines and treatment for COVID-19, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

* Poland cannot rule out an early parliamentary election if the political crisis over a presidential vote scheduled in May deepens, Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Michal Dworczyk said on Wednesday. The Polish Senate on Tuesday rejected a government proposal to hold a May 10 presidential election by postal ballot because of the coronavirus pandemic, a defeat for the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party that had been in a widely anticipated.

* Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele announced still tougher measures on Tuesday to curb the coronavirus pandemic, including shopping trips limited to twice a week. The new measures take effect for 15 days from Thursday in the impoverished Central American nation, which has recorded 587 infections and 14 deaths and already had some of the region's strictest curbs.

* Mexico's government and the auto industry have drafted protocols to prepare for an easing of coronavirus lockdown measures, a lobby group said on Tuesday, as President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador signaled some factories could open in coming weeks.

* Colombia's mandatory quarantine will be extended by a further two weeks as it tries to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, President Ivan Duque said on Tuesday, although additional sectors will be allowed to start returning to work. The Andean country, which has reported more than 8,600 confirmed cases, leading to 378 deaths, began a national quarantine on March 24 and has previously extended it twice. It had been set to end on Monday.

* There have been 6,935 new cases of the novel coronavirus in Brazil since Monday evening and 600 new deaths, the health ministry said on Tuesday. The nation has now recorded 114,715 confirmed cases of the virus and 7,921 deaths, the ministry said. New cases increased roughly 6.4% from Monday evening, while deaths increased roughly 8.2%.

* The number of new coronavirus cases confirmed in Peru on Tuesday soared above 50,000, highlighting the country's struggle to tamp down the virus' spread with the infection rate yet to reach its peak, a medical expert said. Peru's President Martin Vizcarra announced on Tuesday that the total number of people infected amounted to 51,189, up 3,817 from the previous day; while 100 more dead took the tally to 1,444.
