Penny Abeywardena, New York City’s Commissioner for International Affairs, asked Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN, to convey the sincere thanks of the New York authorities and people to the authorities and people of Hanoi.
She hailed the Vietnamese capital’s assistance as being extremely practical in the context that New York City is still struggling to cope with the pandemic.
For his part, Quy voiced his hope that the gifts from Hanoi people would contribute to helping New York residents to overcome the current period.

He expressed his wish that the two cities will have more opportunities to cooperate in the future, especially between their businesses, aiming to promote socio-economic development and overcome the consequences of the disease.

Thus far, New York City has recorded more than 220,000 COVID-19 cases, accounting for 50% of the cases across the whole of New York State, with 22,000 deaths. The average number of new infections has now been reduced to just over 300 per day. At present, the city is in phase three of reopening, continuing to apply social distancing measures and compulsory mask wearing in public areas.
