* Chinese health authority said Tuesday (July 28) that it received reports of 68 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Monday, including four imported cases and 64 locally-transmitted ones. As of Monday, mainland China had 83,959 confirmed coronavirus cases, the health authority said. The COVID-19 death toll remained at 4,634.
* The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Monday reported 4,225,687 cases of the new coronavirus, an increase of 61,795 cases from its previous count, and said that the number of deaths had risen by 564 to 146,546.
* Brazil on Monday reported a total of 2,442,375 coronavirus cases and 87,618 deaths, as cases continue to rise in the world's second most affected country. Brazil reported 23,384 new cases and 614 new deaths.
* Russia reported 5,395 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing its nationwide tally to 823,515, the fourth largest in the world. Russia's coronavirus taskforce said 150 people had died over the last 24 hours, pushing the official death toll in the country of around 145 million people to 13,504.
* India's federal health ministry on Tuesday reported 654 new deaths due to COVID-19 and 47,703 new positive cases, taking the number of deaths to 33,425 and total cases to 1,483,156.
* Cambodia on Tuesday confirmed a new imported COVID-19 case, raising the total number of infections in the country to 226, said a Health Ministry's statement. Cambodia on Sunday decided to temporarily suspend flights from Malaysia and Indonesia after the kingdom had seen a remarkable spike in imported COVID-19 cases through these flights. The suspension will take effect from Aug. 1, 2020 onwards until further notice, said a Heath Ministry's statement.
* Indonesia reported 1,748 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, bringing its tally to 102,051 confirmed cases overall, Health Ministry data showed. The number of deaths in the Southeast Asian nation related to COVID-19 rose by 63, bringing the total to 4,901.
* Malaysia's exports grew 8.8 percent year on year to MYR82.87 billion (about US$19.5 billion), showing signs of recovery from the COVID-19 impact, official data showed Tuesday. Malaysian International Trade and Industry Ministry said in a statement that total trade in June expanded by 2.2 percent year on year to MYR144.84 billion, driven by increases in trade with China, the United States and Vietnam.
* At the 6th National Conference of War Veterans held in Pyongyang on Monday, the Chairman of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un stressed the importance of nuclear deterrence on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the armistice of the 1950-53 Korean War, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Tuesday.
* Spain's Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism Reyes Maroto on Monday voiced hope that negotiations with Britain could lift the quarantine imposed on people returning from the Balearic and Canary Islands. The health ministry noted that cases in Spain have tripled in the last two weeks, with Catalonia and Aragon regions the main epicenters of outbreaks. According to health ministry data, Spain has a total of 278,782 coronavirus cases as of Monday, up from 272,421 on Friday.
* About 10 weeks after Italy started loosening the country's national coronavirus lockdown, it is preparing to tighten them again on a small scale, the latest precautions after infection rates began to rise again in some parts of Europe. In Italy, the pandemic remains largely under control. On Monday, the country reported 170 new daily infections, and five deaths from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
* Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison cut short an interstate tour on Tuesday to help deal with a "very complex" coronavirus outbreak in aged care homes in Melbourne, the epicentre of a second wave of infection that has alarmed health officials. Victoria, Australia's second most populous state with its capital in Melbourne, reported 384 new COVID-19 cases or 96% of Australia's total new infections on Tuesday, officials said.
* The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 633 to 206,242, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Tuesday. The reported death toll rose by 4 to 9,122, the tally showed.
* Mexico has 395,489 total reported coronavirus cases and 44,022 deaths, the fourth highest death tally worldwide, according to figures published by Johns Hopkins University on Monday. That is an increase of 4,973 cases and 342 deaths from the data published by Mexico's health ministry on Sunday evening.
* Indonesia will allow several schools located outside COVID-19 low risk areas or green zones, to conduct face-to-face learning practices along with tight health protocols, an official said on Monday. Chief of the Novel Coronavirus Task Force Doni Monardo said that many students have been facing difficulties during the online learning system due to poor internet signals.
* Republic of Korea reported 28 more cases of COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Tuesday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 14,203. One more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 300. The total fatality rate stood at 2.11 percent.
* Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab said on Tuesday Israel had violated his country's sovereignty with a "dangerous military escalation" along the Israeli-Lebanese frontier on Monday, and called for caution after a rise in border tensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces had thwarted an attempt by the Iran-backed Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah to infiltrate across the Lebanese frontier on Monday. The Iranian-backed Shi'ite group denied this.
* Uzbek security service and police forces have detained 15 suspected members of Islamist militant group Katiba al-Tawhid wal-Jihad after a joint raid in southeastern Kashkadarya region.
