Compared to the 75-year journey of Nhan Dan (People) Newspaper (March 11, 1951–2026), Nhan Dan Online has only travelled a period of 28 years (June 21, 1998–2026). However, compared to other online newspapers, Nhan Dan’s online publication has the longest history. Like a strong branch within a deeply rooted banyan tree, Nhan Dan Online possesses all the strengths for development and has truly made breakthroughs in the past five years.

A CAMPAIGN TO RECREATE CAMPAIGNS

Ayear ago, in early March 2025, before even attending the celebration of the 74th anniversary of the first issue of Nhan Dan Newspaper, reporters from Nhan Dan Online were already preparing to set off in three directions: Hue–Da Nang, the Central Highlands, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Before that, immediately after the Lunar New Year holiday, the leaders of Nhan Dan Online and the Political–Foreign Affairs Department held several meetings with the Military History Institute, with technology partners, and internal meetings to quickly assign operational tasks. While reporters were “on the battlefield,” editors, in coordination with experts from the Military History Institute, extracted data on historical campaigns and battles to gradually input it.

All those urgent tasks were in preparation for a special feature that would launch just over a month later — the “Great Victory of Spring 1975” special feature.

The reporters, who normally only work in their assigned fields such as culture, society, science, health, politics, and economics, were now “divided” to follow each campaign, trying to put their footprints in the footsteps of the soldiers from 50 years ago, to understand and write about them. For the Hue–Da Nang campaign, three reporters travelled by train, were met by the resident reporter in Hue City, who arranged accommodation and meals for them and coordinated their work throughout the trip.

The group that went to the Central Highlands consisted of only two men. They travelled by train to Da Nang, then split up, each heading in a different direction to reach remote villages and find key figures. The largest group, consisting of six reporters, went to Ho Chi Minh City, aiming to recreate the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign. Notably, a fourth group, comprising technology partners and cameramen, travelled by land, carrying specialised equipment for filming and using drones along the march from north to south.

Unlike soldiers during wartime, communication was difficult, so the reporter groups communicated daily via text messages and phone calls.

We shared stories and testimonies about each witness we met along the way.

Reporters who were “on guard” at home were also asked to meet with witnesses of the Ho Chi Minh and Central Highlands campaigns who were living in Ha Noi.

Leaving the safe haven of the beloved “banyan tree”, the reporters were all bewildered and anxious. But just half a day after arriving in Ho Chi Minh City, they managed to interview their first subject. The whole group happily went to the home of Ms. Chin Nghia, the only female commando who participated in the attack on the Independence Palace during the Tet Offensive of 1968, to hear her moving story.

From that moment, they realised the crucial mission of reporters “recording history,” so they split into three small groups, rented three motorbikes, and scoured every nook and cranny of the city, making the most of our time there to gather as much information as possible.

Motorbikes were the main means of transportation for the reporting team during their 10-day stay in Ho Chi Minh City.

As expected, throughout our 10 days in the city, the entire team had a packed schedule every day, gathering enough material to write the series of articles as planned. There were also some “funny yet frustrating” incidents during their work. For example, when they went to the home of Uncle Tu Cang (the intelligence hero Nguyen Van Tau), they discovered they had mistaken him for Nguyen Van Cang, the former secretary of Comrade Sau Dan (the late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet), the former Secretary of the Saigon–Gia Dinh Regional Party Committee.

It was a coincidence that both men shared the nickname Tu Cang and were both 97 years old. Without that mix-up, they wouldn’t have learned about another historical figure who had contributed to healing the wounds of war in the early years of liberation in Southern Viet Nam. Fortunately, the reporting team was later able to meet the correct intelligence officer Tu Cang, whom they had met and written about 10 years earlier, when Ho Chi Minh City celebrated its 40th anniversary of liberation.

The trips of the reporting teams were successful in different ways. Meeting each person was like “reporting a victory” back to the newsroom. There are historical witnesses that, if they don’t meet them this time, and wait until the 5th or 10th anniversary to seek them out, they might never have the chance to meet them again.

Such were the successful outcomes of the reporting teams’ trips, each in its own way.

But the heaviest task was not the field trips themselves; it was the stage of writing the articles and collecting photographs and documents to build the stories. Nearly 100 painstaking eMagazine articles on the Sai Gon Special Forces, political prisoners in Con Dao, nearly a dozen portraits of heroic pilots and tank drivers, as well as stories about national reconciliation and numerous witness accounts recalling the memories of the Central Highlands campaign and the Hue–Da Nang campaign were published one after another within a month in preparation for the momentous day.

Last April 30, seeing streams of people gathering around the banyan tree to view the interactive exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification, scanning QR codes to read each journalistic product, we felt proud to have contributed a small part to the overall success of Nhan Dan Newspaper.

A “rapid campaign” of 50 days and nights by the entire team of reporters and editors of Nhan Dan Online successfully recreated the major campaigns that led to the historic victory of April 30 half a century ago. .

FROM DATA SPECIAL PAGES TO HOTSPOT REPORTING

Nhan Dan Newspaper, particularly Nhan Dan Online, has undergone strong transformation since 2021 with many pioneering applications and innovative initiatives. The story above is only a small part of the five-year journey of data journalism flourishing at Nhan Dan Online during this transformation.

Over the past two years, due to the large number of special pages, the time available for us to produce each one has been only about one to two months. At times we even had to work on content for two to three special pages simultaneously. As a result, the reporting team has faced considerable pressure. From reporters assigned to cover specific sectors, they have become versatile writers capable of producing in-depth articles across many fields.

Over the past five years, Nhan Dan Online has launched 20 special pages. In one record case, we had to conduct up to five field trips by different groups of reporters to complete a single special page. Thanks to the investment in quality, many article series produced for these pages have gone beyond the limited scope of those data pages and have been highly appreciated by readers. Two series produced for the Dien Bien Phu Campaign and the 17th Parallel special pages — “Vinh Moc Tunnels and the Vinh Linh Underground Village System: A Miracle of Life in the Land of Fire” and “70 Years of the Dien Bien Phu Victory: Stories of Those Who Stayed Behind” — won the 2024 National Press Awards.

From reporters assigned to follow particular sectors, they have become versatile writers capable of producing in-depth articles across multiple fields.

Most recently, from September 2025 to January 2026, the mobilisation of the entire department, with active support from specialised departments and resident correspondents at home and abroad, was once again brought into play to produce the Communist Party–14th National Congress special page, the official page for this Congress.

Nhan Dan Online combined data journalism by editors and reporters with on-site reporting at the Congress by reporters from the Party Building Department and Nhan Dan Online reporters to make the page a success, attracting a surge in visits during the days of the Congress.

Yet our work on special pages has not meant neglecting daily news coverage. Over the past five years, Nhan Dan Online has organised numerous online forums and talk shows to contribute perspectives on issues reflecting everyday life, and carried out many live broadcasts on major events. During this period, two major earthquakes struck Turkiye and Myanmar.

Not afraid to venture into dangerous and difficult areas, Nhan Dan Online reporters were present at both disaster hotspots to send exclusive reports back to the newsroom.

Domestically, immediately after receiving reports, reporters were on the scene to interview witnesses at the site of the mini apartment fire in Ha Noi; entered the heart of the storm when super typhoon Yagi made landfall in Quang Ninh; or rushed by motorbike to Phu Tho to report on the collapse of Phong Chau Bridge...

Recently, in December 2025, the series titled “Seeking solutions to combat air pollution in Ha Noi”, produced by a team of Nhan Dan Online reporters, attracted significant public attention as it voiced the concerns of residents of the capital who have long had to live with hazardous levels of fine particulate matter. The series not only exposed the reality of the problem but also delved into its underlying causes, offering recommendations to help authorities address this pressing issue.

With the aim to promptly identify solutions, we organised a candid dialogue involving representatives from ministries and agencies responsible for the environment, transport and construction, alongside leading experts. The series combined multiple journalistic genres — including news reporting (on air pollution), field reportage (from pollution hotspots), interviews (with environmental experts and policymakers), and comprehensive coverage of the dialogue forum — opening a new approach in journalism and helping to address the issue in a thorough and comprehensive manner.

The Vietnamese-language version of Nhan Dan Online, with its rich and timely data-driven content, has provided the core material for the newspaper’s foreign-language editions — English, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and more recently Korean — to promptly publish specialised features and external affairs news for international audiences.

On June 2023, at the ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of Nhan Dan Online’s connection to the Internet (June 21, 1998 –June 21, 2023), Le Quoc Minh, Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Communications, Education and Mass Mobilisation, and President of the Viet Nam Journalists Association, remarked: “Thanks to the efforts of the leaders of various units, reporters, editors and staff throughout the Nhan Dan Newspaper system at home and abroad, Nhan Dan Online has entered a period of stronger development than ever before.”

USING TECHNOLOGY AS A POWERFUL ASSISTANT, SOCIAL MEDIA AS AN EXTENDED ARM

In addition to its achievements in content development, Nhan Dan Online has also introduced numerous pioneering technological applications and initiatives. The most recent example is the aforementioned series on fine dust pollution. The series demonstrates the full strengths of digital journalism, combining modern approaches such as data journalism, solutions journalism, and visual journalism.

Another highlight of the series is the authors’ application of artificial intelligence (AI) to aggregate and analyse data, enabling readers to track developments in Ha Noi’s fine dust pollution towards the end of 2025 through environmental monitoring applications. This also represents a practical step in implementing Resolution No. 57 of the Politburo, which promotes breakthroughs in science, technology, and innovation within journalistic practice.

With the rapid development of AI, in 2025 Nhan Dan Online accelerated its practical application of this technology by creating automated workflows that help shorten data-processing time and streamline tasks, treating AI tools as assistants within the newsroom rather than substitutes for journalists. The newsroom has also developed AI-based applications to produce supplementary products supporting traditional journalistic works, particularly in data journalism, thereby enhancing depth and outreach.

Notably, these applications include: a tool calculating average rainfall in central Viet Nam during the record floods of October 2025; an application measuring air pollution levels in Ha Noi in December 2026; a carbon footprint calculator on the NetZero microsite; and a real-time medal tally application for the SEA Games 33 leaderboard...

Notably, the Chatbot featured on the Communist Party–14th National Congress portal (daihoidangtoanquoc.vn) helps readers significantly shorten the time needed to search for information.

The information provided by the AI also ensures 100% accuracy, as it is processed and synthesised from materials already published on the website.

Nhan Dan Online also serves as a core force in implementing innovative applications at Nhan Dan Newspaper, combining print and digital journalism products. To attract Gen Z readers (born between 1996 and 2012) — who grew up in the digital era and have had little exposure to printed publications — physical newspaper products must now be connected to the digital space.

Recent special supplements of Nhan Dan Newspaper that generated strong public interest have all followed this approach. The supplement marking the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (printed in 400,000 copies) connected a Panorama painting of the campaign with augmented reality (AR) technology, allowing readers to view animated images through a smartphone application. The supplement commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (printed in 500,000 copies) enabled readers to follow the developments of the Ho Chi Minh Campaign of 1975 using 3D mapping technology via projectors. Meanwhile, the supplement marking the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam (printed in one million copies) allowed readers to “check in” with 3D models of the Independence Flag Tower, experience the historic moment when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence on September 2, 1945 through AR technology, and listen to his historic speech on Spotify via a unique “tattoo” code...

During the 14th National Party Congress, Nhan Dan Newspaper also published nine supplementary pages covering nine resolutions recently issued by the Politburo (Resolutions No. 57, 59, 66, 68, 70, 71, 72, 79, and 80). These supplements provide concise summaries of strategic resolutions through vivid infographics, linked to detailed eMagazine articles on digital platforms with interactive technology.

The five-year journey of strengthening technology applications at Nhan Dan Online has also been marked by several milestones:

In May 2021: The Vietnamese edition, followed by all foreign-language editions of Nhan Dan Online, completed the transition to a new, shorter, and more reader-friendly domain name: nhandan.vn.

In July 2022: Nhan Dan Online redesigned the interface of its Vietnamese edition and subsequently its foreign-language editions. The new interface and CMS system integrate the key features of modern journalism, enabling the presentation of data journalism, multimedia content, and in-depth reporting. After its launch, the new design received high praise from readers and media professionals.

Nhan Dan Online has taken the lead in developing a modern converged newsroom model, one of the key solutions for implementing its digital transformation strategy and applying advanced technologies to journalism operations. Officially inaugurated on June 13, 2023, the Nhan Dan Online converged newsroom has since become a destination for study visits by media organisations and journalism training institutions nationwide.

In addition, Nhan Dan Online has strengthened its presence on digital platforms to expand its audience reach, enhance interaction with readers, and improve communication effectiveness.

Since May 2021, Nhan Dan Online has actively developed the Nhan Dan Newspaper fanpage on Facebook, making it a top priority in its multi-platform development strategy. The fanpage now has nearly 500,000 followers, with particularly high reach and engagement indicators (likes, shares, and comments) compared to many other media outlets.

In summary, the past five years have marked a period of “digitalisation and rejuvenation” for Nhan Dan Online. From a newspaper once considered somewhat “formal,” it has become more approachable, modern, and diverse, reinforcing its leading position within Viet Nam’s revolutionary press.

Exactly 75 years ago, amid the flames of resistance in the Viet Bac war zone, the first issue of Nhan Dan Newspaper was published, carrying the mission of serving as the voice of the Party, the State, and the people of Viet Nam. Over three quarters of a century, in the continuous process of renewal at Nhan Dan Newspaper, Nhan Dan Online has left a significant imprint with its mission of launching a remarkable “expedition” into the digital space. Many challenges still lie ahead, but each obstacle will help Nhan Dan Online grow stronger — like a thriving branch of the ancient banyan tree rooted at 71 Hang Trong Street.
