Vietnam Post

Building a national brand from simple things

The post office — a simple and intimate image of connection between people and society — is deeply ingrained in the mind of every Vietnamese person. The existence of the post office seems ordinary but it features countless precious values for the lives of people from urban to rural, mountainous and island areas.

Born in hardship, growing with the country’s development

In August 1945, the Professional Communications Committee, the predecessor of the postal service, was established with the mission of communicating information from the home front to the battlefields. It manifested through simple things such as handwritten letters sent home from soldiers on the front line, the longing of old mothers for their sons and daughters in border areas, as well as the connection that brings Vietnam to the world and the affirmation of the country’s sovereignty.

Originating in the late 19th century, the postal service was associated with the image of dedicated postmen who deliver mail to all regions. The letters and telegrams were part of a network of information communication, creating historical monuments while making significant contributions to defeating the enemy and liberating the country.

Over the past nearly 80 years, the postal service has grown strong and is now present all over the country. On the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, in remote villages and in the middle of bustling cities alike, postal vans are still running day and night to form the physical infrastructure and ensure the physical flow, as well as the digital economy’s data flow — building a digital society and digital nation with national digital platforms such as the Vietnamese digital address system diachiso.gov.vn and the agricultural e-commerce platform, bringing Vietnamese agricultural products to the world, helping to implement digital transformation in agriculture, and creating new rural areas.

With advanced technology, the postal service has become an essential service, contributing to the country’s development with the mission of serving the community.

Staying close to local communities, bringing the Party’s voice to the people

Every morning, when the first rooster crows in the mountainous commune of Ky Thuong in Hoanh Bo District (now Ha Long City), Linh Thi Xoan, born in 1976, starts her working day as an employee at the commune’s post office. She has also served as the bridge, connecting the villages with knowledge, the press, the media, letters and packages sent from across the country to her homeland.

Having done this job for more than 20 years, Xoan travels around 120 km each day to receive documents, letters, and goods and carries out the important task of the postal sector:  Bringing the Party's voice through the press to the village.

With her enthusiastic passion for work, she embraces weather conditions, no matter if it’s a sunny, rainy, or cloudy day, to deliver Nhan Dan Newspaper, Quang Ninh newspaper and many communication publications to the authorities and people in the commune.

Every time people in the village or commune receive a letter, it brings me joy and happiness. I share the happiness with them. Every time a new policy is issued, I am the one who brings news to the commune’s authorities, and the policy is disseminated to everyone, helping my village become more developed every day. I am thrilled to bring happiness to many people.

Xoan faces many hardships travelling from the commune’s downtown to the district to receive documents, letters, goods, and newspapers. It is even more difficult for her to deliver them to recipients’ houses because the area is very far from each other. It is around 10 km from the commune’s downtown to Khe Tre, Khe Phuong and Khe Luong, but Xoan is never absent when people need her.

“Now that technology has developed, there is less letter exchange. However, there are still tasks assigned to deliver the Party’s newspapers to the authorities, pensions and benefits to elders, textbooks and notebooks to children, and goods to people. I love my job, so no matter what, I will still be devoted to my work like I did more than 20 years ago,” Xoan asserted.

It is expected that the newly built roads will quickly be completed, so that every day the footsteps of Xoan and other post office workers will have more strength, courageously overcoming difficulties, stick close to the area to serve the people. They are considered loving flowers that beautify the picture of Vietnam Post Office.

Post office on remote island

The bustling atmosphere prepares for the new spring, the sounds of the new season echo everywhere, from remote villages to bustling cities, everyone is rushing to pack up the chaos of the past year, North-South bus trips, trains leaving the station,... up and down the Vietnam Post Office are bustling. It is not simply connecting supply and demand, expanding trade, but there is also an effort to articulate the journey of transporting and sending gifts, friendships, and human love, and is like a "fluttering note" in the chaos of daily life.

On Sinh Ton Island, the Post Office - Cultural Point is located within the commune's headquarters building, this is also a gathering place for people to join cultural activities, read, listen, and look up information, is the physical connection between the heart of mainland and the remote island.

More crowded and more fun is the Post Office - Cultural Point in Big Truong Sa Island. Newspapers and stamps sent to the mainland and received from the mainland to the island via the Post Office are always something very sacred and precious.

During that year's business trip, I met Vu and Minh, two young men from Khanh Hoa who volunteered to go to the island to carry out their special mission for 5 years as cultural staff of the Post Office - Cultural Point.

When asked about their dreams, both of their eyes lit up like a ray of warm sunshine on a new day on a green island.

“We don't feel any hardships, we are very happy here, being able to write with the people and soldiers the history of building and developing the island commune, being aware that we not only serve the people and the country, the Post Office - Culture Point of the island commune is also a sacred milestone affirming the country's sovereignty. We are proud and very happy. I don't have any dreams for myself, I just hope that the country will always be peaceful and happy, and that we will always silently connect the joys."

On the island, the young men on duty witnessed many emotional stories, tears of happiness when the soldiers received news from their homeland, and the confessions and longings of the boys and girls are sent into the letters.

"I always remember the image of the schoolgirl when she went to the island to meet her father, who was the commander on the island. For several years, the father and daughter only sent each other letters and made quick phone calls. Father's memories on the island sent to his daughter are sometimes just snail shells or a piece of coral rock by post, and then they would meet on this island. That's great."

With the responsibility of the national postal enterprise, Vietnam Post has long strived to stay ahead of the trend and apply technology to production and business activities. In addition to investing in modern sorting lines, digital platforms at each service office, and building smart post offices and unmanned delivery stations, a series of foundational and infrastructure applications serving digital economic development are deployed and applied.

The highlight that can be mentioned is the Vietnam Digital Address platform, which was built and verified for accuracy based on the efforts of nearly 50,000 postal workers in all parts of the country. Digital addresses have been applied to modern sorting lines in regional logistics hubs, initially putting digital maps into use for humanitarian, firefighting, and agricultural products, ready for management applications, and identifying people's addresses to serve smart city construction. Digitising records, building facilities and digitising population data have become a regular job for Post Office workers.

Vietnam Post’s e-commerce platform, with the aspiration of becoming Vietnam’s largest trading channel for agricultural products and specialties, has affirmed its position and gradually become familiar with people, because of its usefulness and ability to connect supply and demand of producers and consumers in the digital environment only through smart devices.

Every day, millions of postal items and packages on e-commerce business platforms successfully reach customers, helping to complete the final step in the chain of digital commerce activities.

Making efforts to serve people from all walks of life with humane and efficient services

Don and her daughter are living in Ho Chi Minh City and her daughter is in 8th grade this year. Don has received textbooks for her children through the post for the past 3 years. The books, which were carefully delivered to her address by postmen, help her child feel secure in studying.

“My child is attending an international school according to her father’s nationality, so textbooks are often sent from France. I feel very secure when the Vietnam Post delivers them to my home promptly at the beginning of each semester.”

Not only Don, but many other families also choose the Vietnam Post to equip their children with textbooks, notebooks and many other school supplies when the new school year approaches.

Especially, public services and one-stop centres of the departments and agencies have been gradually shifting to Vietnam Post to help save costs for people and ensure safety and convenience in implementing public services. Increasing people's and society's trust in policies and administrative procedures is one of the key tasks that Vietnam Post has been carrying out.
