Eighty years ago, the Vietnamese people launched a general uprising that ended French colonial rule and the feudal regime, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam. Nhan Dan Newspaper recounts the August Revolution as it unfolded.
Upon receiving news that fascist Japan had been defeated and was about to surrender to the Allies, the Party Central Committee and the Viet Minh (League for the Independence of Vietnam) General Committee immediately established the National Uprising Committee. It comprised five members: Truong Chinh, Vo Nguyen Giap, Le Thanh Nghi, Tran Dang Ninh and Chu Van Tan, with General Secretary Truong Chinh directly in charge.

Upon hearing the news that the US had dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima (Japan), Comrade Ho Chi Minh and the Standing Committee of the Party Central Committee decided to convene a National Party Conference to discuss the plan to launch the general uprising.

The National Party Conference closed, delegates promptly returned to their localities, bringing with them the Party’s guidelines to launch and lead the people in uprisings to seize power.

Following the conclusion of the National Party Conference, the Congress of People’s Representatives was held at Tan Trao (Tuyen Quang). The congress brought together more than 60 delegates from the North, Central, and South regions; overseas Vietnamese representatives; representatives of political parties; and various national and religious organisations.

In his letter, he informed the people that Japan had surrendered. He highlighted the growing strength of the Viet Minh Front; and announced the establishment of the Viet Nam National Liberation Committee, elected by the “Congress of People’s Representatives”. He described it as “a major step forward in our nation’s struggle for liberation over nearly a century.”

In Son Tay, a large demonstration was held by the people. Speaking on behalf of the provincial Viet Minh Committee, Nguyen Quoc Hong called on comrades and compatriots to rise up, dissolve the puppet government, and establish a revolutionary government.

In Yen Bai, the Provincial Party Organisation organised a mass meeting at Cang Yard, Yen Bai Town, attracting nearly 10,000 participants. The Provisional Revolutionary People’s Committee of Yen Bai was introduced to the people, with Ngo Minh Loan as Chairman and Nguyen Phuc as Vice Chairman.

In Hai Phong, the city’s uprising committee declared that August 23 would be the day of insurrection. At dawn, hundreds of thousands of armed demonstrators carrying red flags with golden stars poured into the square in front of the Opera House like torrents.

In Ha Nam, the puppet administration surrendered at Phu Ly, hands over power to the revolution.In Quang Yen Province, the Provisional Revolutionary Committee was introduced to the people. The atmosphere of struggle to seize power was vibrant, spreading across the localities, and the victory in Quang Yen’s provincial capital encouraged the revolutionary forces and the people of other areas to continue to rise up.

At dawn, the people of Sai Gon rose in a heroic revolutionary atmosphere. The streets were filled with flags and banners. Chants and slogans highlighting the determination to defend independence and freedom echoed throughout the city.
