Dien Bien boosts border trade cooperation with Laos’ northern provinces

The Department of Industry and Trade of Dien Bien Province on November 17 chaired a conference on border trade promotion with six northern provinces of Laos, including Oudomxay, Phongsaly, Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha, Bokeo, and Xayabury.

At the conference held in Dien Bien Phu City, Dien Bien Province and Laos’ six northern provinces set a target to reach an annual import-export growth of 8-10%. The Department of Industry and Trade of Dien Bien Province and Lao provinces also sign yearly deals to foster border trade activities.

In addition, both sides will alternately hold talks to exchange information and organise border trade fairs to facilitate trade exchange between businesses of the two countries.

The two sides will also encourage investment in building and exploiting border infrastructure, focusing on warehouses, commercial centres and logistics services to serve import and export activities.

Total import and export revenue between Dien Bien and Laos’ northern provinces was posted at 143.43 million USD during 2021-2023 period. The main imports and exports are agricultural products, garments and textiles, household appliances and construction materials.
