Speaking at the ceremony, Soe Win, Minister of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement of Myanmar, expressed his deep gratitude to the international search and rescue teams for their quick response and support for Myanmar after the devastating earthquake happened on March 28. He emphasised that the presence of international search and rescue teams in Myanmar is a testament to solidarity, compassion, and the humanitarian spirit, helping countries to unite in difficult times.
According to Soe Win, the 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28 profoundly impacted Myanmar, causing the tragic death of more than 3,480 people, and other over 4,800 injured and 214 people still missing. In addition, the earthquake also destroyed infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and buildings. However, Soe Win said that even in the midst of countless difficulties, hope still exists in Myanmar thanks to the collective strength and support of friends around the world.
“The joint effort of the international community is a beacon of hope. A total of 99 relief flights have arrived in Myanmar, carrying 1,797 rescue workers and 714 tonnes of relief supplies. We are deeply grateful for the support of search and rescue teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam, who have been quick to join us. Your tireless efforts have not only saved lives but also brought comfort and hope to families who have suffered unimaginable loss. Your dedication reminds us all that, in the face of adversity, humanity is strongest when united,” Soe Win said at the ceremony.
Minister Soe Win also said that with the efforts of other countries, the post-earthquake rescue work in Myanmar has achieved positive results. As of April 6, search teams had rescued eight survivors and recovered the bodies of 172 victims in affected areas such as the capital Naypyidaw, Mandalay, and Sagaing.
“As the search and rescue phase has come to an end, I would like to express my deepest gratitude not only to the rescue teams but also to the people of your country who have shown solidarity and support to the people of Myanmar during this disaster,” the Minister emphasised.
After concluding the search operations in the capital Naypyidaw on April 6, the delegation of the Vietnam People's Army organised a session to review their experiences in assisting Myanmar to overcome the earthquake's aftermath.
