The council is to perform its duties as stipulated by the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment and the Government’s Decree No.96/2023/ND-CP, dated December 30, 2023, providing detailed regulations of the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment; along with other tasks assigned by the Prime Minister. The chairman of the National Medical Council is concurrently the leader of the Ministry of Health.
The vice chairmen include one permanent vice chairman responsible for specialised activities, one vice chairman who is the director general of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (concurrently), and another who is the director general of the Department of Science Technology and Training.
The prime minister will appoint and dismiss the chairman and vice chairmen of the National Medical Council based upon the recommendations of the Minister of Health.
The permanent vice chairman will serve a tenure of five years and may be reappointed, but not for more than two consecutive tenures.
