In a recent interview with Nhan Dan Newspaper’s correspondent in Laos, Member of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and Head of its External Relations Committee Thongsavanh Phomvihane underscored the unceasing development of the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.
The most outstanding achievement between Laos and Vietnam in the past 60 years, especially after establishing diplomatic relations in 1962, is that the two countries fought together against a common enemy to achieve national independence and together move towards the complete liberation of the countries in 1975, he noted.
The two countries then signed a Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in 1977. This is a historical milestone whichprovided a solid foundation and a legal basis for consolidating and promoting the special cooperative relationship, making an especially important contribution to the cause of national construction and defence of each country.
Entering the period of reform and national construction in the 1980s, the Laos-Vietnam relationship was lifted to new heights, helping the two sides overcome difficulties, strengthen cooperation and exchange at all levels from the central to local levels, contributing to promoting internal resources and enhancing the role and position of each country on both the regional and global scales.
The Lao official also took the occasion to express profound gratitude to the fraternal Vietnamese Party, State and people for their valuable and timely help to Laos in the past struggle for national liberation and the current cause of national construction and defence, especially in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and tackling economic and financial difficulties.
In the present complex and unpredictable situation in the region and the world, Laos and Vietnam should further strengthen their mutual political trust and deepen their cooperation in security-defence and diplomacy, andenhance the efficiency of their bilateral partnership in economy, culture, education, healthcare, and science-technology, according to the Lao official.
He also proposed that the two sides increase the exchange of information, timely coordinate viewpoints on important issues and support each other at regional and international forums such as ASEAN, the UN, WHO, and the Mekong sub-region, thus maintaining the in-depth development of their great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation while contributing to peace and stability in the region and the world at large.
He also spoke highly of the fine cooperation between the External Relations Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations.
The two committees are also the coordination centres for organising political theory seminars between the two parties, helping key officials and managers of the Lao Party and State who are participating in the research, training and fostering of political theory in Vietnam to achieve the best results, he said.
Head of the External Relations Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee also added that the two sides not only regularly organise meetings, exchanges of delegations, but also coordinate to exchange information at regional and international forums.
