France has officially taken over the chairmanship of the Group of Seven (G7) from Canada. As the country assuming the role of G7 chair in 2026, France is carrying a dual challenge on its shoulders.

The 2025 Summit of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialised nations is considered of great significance amid the current fragmented global geopolitical landscape, with rising protectionism and diverging priorities among member states that are testing internal cohesion.

Despite dealing with a serious gas supply crisis, the European Union (EU) member states are still struggling in finding solutions to cool down gas prices, which have been making a strong impact on the continent’s economy. EU members are still deeply divided on the proposed gas price ceiling.

The Group of Seven (G7) has pledged to increase emissions reduction efforts and climate support for developing countries.
