The diplomat said she was impressed by what Vietnam has done to maintain the bond among the ASEAN nations in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and promoting economic recovery, while helping make the voice of ASEAN heard at international forums.
Such a commitment has been continued by Vietnam at the UN Security Council by promoting the role of regional organisations in ensuring regional peace and security as well as better coordination with the UN, added Lochen.
The Norwegian diplomat went on to say that Vietnam is an important voice at the UN Security Council, adding that Vietnam’s successful term as ASEAN’s chair amid difficulties has helped enhance the country’s position and reputation in the region and the international community.
She emphasised that this is evidence of Vietnam’s proactiveness and professionalism as a responsible international partner.
According to the Ambassador, Vietnam and Norway share many priority topics at the UN Security Council, specifically security and climate change; conflict prevention and peace building; the protection of civilians; women, peace and security.
She said she closely watched Vietnam’s activities at the UN Security Council and highly appreciated Vietnam’s sense of responsibility and proactive role in working with the council members to seek balanced and constructive solutions.
During its presidency of the UN Security Council, Vietnam created an ambitious plan with many notable events, said the Norwegian diplomat, adding that she was fortunate to be invited to attend virtual events in Hanoi and was impressed at the attendance of high-level guests and the outcome of such events.
She stated that Vietnam should feel proud as the country is concluding the final months of its tenure at the UN Security Council.
Like Norway, Vietnam also strongly supports an effective multilateral system with the UN at the core, said Ambassador Lochen, emphasising that a rules-based international order and respect for international law are the best protection for small and medium sized countries like Norway and Vietnam.
