However, the retail revenue of goods and services in the second quarter of this year fell by 5.8% over the previous quarter and by 4.6% over the same period last year, mainly due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The total retail sales in the first six months of this year decreased by 0.8% over the corresponding period last year.
The total retail sales of goods reached VND1,895 trillion in the six-month period, accounting for 79.6% of the total retail sales of goods and services and up 3.4% over the same period last year thanks to abundant supply of goods and an increase in online shopping.
Several localities saw higher retail revenue over the same period last year including Hai Phong (up 10.4%), Ho Chi Minh City (up 10.1%), Hanoi (up 9.9%), and Dong Nai (up 8.4%).
The retail revenue of accommodation and catering services posted a sharp decrease of 26.1% in the second quarter of 2020 and a reduction of 18.1% in the six-month period as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the social distancing order.
The tourism and travel sector also suffered a strong decline of 53.2% in the first six months of this year because of the temporary suspension of receiving international visitors.
