* British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has recalled parliament for an emergency Saturday sitting to fast-track legislation aimed at saving British Steel's Scunthorpe plant from closure.

* As of Saturday, the China-Laos Railway has transported 487,000 cross-border passengers from 112 countries and regions since the launch of its international passenger train service two years ago, according to China Railway Kunming Group Co., Ltd.

* The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday approved a new Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Argentina, enabling the country to access 20 billion USD with an immediate disbursement of 12 billion dollars.

* Mexico will "immediately deliver" millions of cubic meters of water to the U.S. state of Texas, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday in response to US President Donald Trump's complaint a day earlier.

* The euro witnessed one of its largest single-day rises against the USD and closed at a three-year high on Friday. The common currency advanced by 2.4 percent and closed at 1.1346 USD on Friday, the reference rate set by the European Central Bank (ECB) showed.

* Nigeria will implement a new policy that imposes a 15-USD daily fine on travelers who overstay their visas from August, a senior official said on Friday.

* The British government announced Friday that it has expanded its ban on personal imports of meat and dairy products to include all EU countries as foot-and-mouth disease spreads across the continent.

* Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources on Saturday announced three new oil and gas discoveries in the country's Western Desert. The ministry said the three discoveries are estimated to produce 2,750 barrels of oil and condensates and 20 million cubic feet of gas per day.

* Kazakhstan's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.8 percent in January-March 2025, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said Friday during a public meeting in Shymkent, according to the president's press service.

* The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) issued an urgent warning on Friday over rapidly depleting essential supplies in the Gaza Strip, as humanitarian conditions approach catastrophic levels.

* At least 32 civilians were killed in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, the Sudanese army said.

* An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 jolted 114 km ESE of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea at 0347 GMT on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said. The epicentre, with a depth of 72.5 km, was initially determined to be at 4.71 degrees south latitude and 153.24 degrees east longitude.

* Bezymianny Volcano, located on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, erupted early Saturday, sending an ash plume of up to 4,000 meters into the sky, according to local authorities.

* At least five people died and six others were injured in a blast that took place inside a factory in India's northwest state of Maharashtra, local police confirmed on Saturday.
