UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed his hope on Sunday (June 23) that there will be no "escalation" of confrontation in the Gulf, Portuguese Lusa News Agency reported.

* Chinese police have teamed up with Myanmar police to crack a large drug trafficking ring with over 100 people arrested and 267 kg of drugs seized.

* A flotilla comprising Russia's most modern warship and its escorts will on Monday arrive at the Havana port for an official visit, said Cuban Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces on Sunday. One of Russia's newest warships, the Project 22350 missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov, heads the naval group.

* The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Sunday described the US-led economic plan for the Middle East as the "second Balfour Declaration." The White House announced in May that the United States would unveil the first part of its Middle East peace plan at an economic workshop in Manama, capital of Bahrain, from June 25 to 26.

* Yemen's Houthi rebels' military spokesman on Sunday vowed more "painful" strikes against Saudi Arabia hours after the rebels claimed responsibility of multiple drone strikes on two Saudi airports.

* Qu Dongyu, China's vice minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, was elected as new Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Roma, Italy, on Sunday. Qu, 56, was chosen during the ongoing 41st FAO Conference, the highest governing body of the Rome-based agency.

* Iran is ready to help Iraq boost its air defense capabilities, said Commander of Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base of the Iranian Army Alireza Sabahi Fard on Sunday.

* Turkey has told the European Union countries that EU should stay out of its dispute with Cyprus over natural gas drilling in parts of the eastern Mediterranean, according to a Turkish document published by a Cypriot newspaper on Sunday.

* Egypt's Defense Minister Mohamed Zaki and Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry left on Sunday for Russia on an official visit for the 2+2 dialogue mechanism between the two countries. The visit aims at discussing means of boosting bilateral relations in all domains, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

* The Syrian army is working to cut all rebels' supply routes in a triangle of countryside areas in northern Syria, a pro-government newspaper reported on Sunday.

* The first container of Panamanian beef bound for China was shipped Saturday (June 22) from the Pacific coast port of Balboa as part of new bilateral trade agreements between the two countries. Beef is Panama's second export to China since the two countries established diplomatic ties on June 13, 2017.

* A group of 37 migrants disembarked in Malta on Sunday afternoon. They were rescued off a dinghy by P52, an Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) patrol boat earlier in the day.

* At least 14 people were killed and over 50 injured Sunday after a makeshift tent collapsed during a religious gathering in India's Western state of Rajasthan, officials said.

* Up to 12 bodies were recovered from the scene of a pipeline explosion in Nigeria's oil-rich Rivers State as of Sunday, local sources said.
