Wushu athletes delivered a timely boost for Viet Nam at the 33rd Southeast Asia (SEA) Games on December 15, securing two gold medals and ending the team’s gold-medal drought on the sixth official competition day.
Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy claimed Viet Nam’s first gold of the day after defeating a Myanmar opponent in the women’s 60kg sanda final. Competing under a three-round format, Thuy dominated from the outset and sealed a convincing victory in less than two minutes of the opening round due to a wide points gap.
The wushu success continued as Truong Van Chuong earned gold in the men’s 70kg sanda final, overpowering his Lao rival 2–0.
With the double triumph, Viet Nam’s wushu team fulfilled its medal targets at the Games.
In kickboxing, Bui Thi Yen Nhi settled for bronze after a narrow 1–2 loss to a Philippine athlete in the women’s 48kg low kick semifinals.
Viet Nam also added silver medals in other sports. In pétanque, the women’s trio team fell 7–13 to hosts Thailand in the final.
In weightlifting, Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien took silver in the women’s 63kg category with lifts of 98kg in the snatch and 121kg in the clean and jerk, totalling 219kg. The gold went to the Philippines’ Ando Elreen Ann with a total of 229kg.
Meanwhile, the Vietnamese women’s handball team advanced to the gold-medal match after a dominant 28–8 victory over the Philippines in the semifinals.
