Speaking at the conference, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan pointed out that Vietnam's agriculture is facing three major changes resulting from market fluctuations, climate change, and changes in consumption trends around the world, stressing that green growth is the sound way for agriculture to adapt to those three changes.
To switch to green agriculture, he emphasised the need to change the perception of farmers, organisations, cooperatives, and residential communities, as well as the full participation of entire industries and international organisations to establish a green ecosystem.
He reported that the ministry is building a set of indicators, which will measure the outcomes of the implementation of the strategy for the sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas, focussing on environmental indicators, and green growth.
Accordingly, the agricultural sector set targets of increasing the use of organic fertilisers to 30% of all those consumed, along with 30% of pesticides and at least 30% of farm areas using water-saving systems, while aiming for over 2% of organic farms out of the total farming area.
The sector will also take measures to foster the application of good agricultural practices in order to improving the quality, value, and competitiveness of the products, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the environment.
The building of new-style rural areas will be strengthened in a greener and more sustainable manner.
