The US Geological Service said the epicenter of the tremor was in the Pacific Ocean, just 46 kilometers north-west of the town of Illapel and some 200 kilometers from the capital Santiago. It is the biggest earthquake since 2010 to hit the South American nation.

President Michelle Bachelet has said she will make her way to the areas worst affected by the quake.
