Initiative launched to promote safer working at apparel factories

The Sustainable Trade Initiative Vietnam (IDH) and the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) jointly launched the “Life and Building Safety Initiative” (LABS) in Hanoi on August 6, in a bid to boost safer working conditions for factory workers in the apparel and footwear industry.

The “Life and Building Safety Initiative” is expected to boost safer working conditions for factory workers in the apparel and footwear industry.

The initiative will assist apparel and footwear factories to meet Vietnamese and international requirements on fire, electrical and structural safety.

IDH, in coordination with a number of large brands and retailers, such as Bestseller, Gap, Li & Fung, PVH, Target, VF Corporation and Walmart, built a set of standards applied by these brands to assist Vietnamese enterprises to fulfil requirements from international brands and distributors.

Country Director of IDH Vietnam Huynh Tien Dung said that the LABS is expected to contribute to promoting trade cooperation and sustainable development of the apparel and footwear industry in Vietnam.

VITAS Deputy Secretary General Hoang Ngoc Anh said that VITAS strongly supports the building of a unified set of standards on factory safety applied by international brands.

VITAS hopes that more brands will participate in LABS to help apparel and footwear factories reduce time and effort for investing in safety solutions and reports to brands and distributors.

LABS is an industry-driven programme, in which multiple brands and retailers are joining forces with public and civil society organisations to operate a scalable programme to eliminate preventable fire, electrical and structural safety risks in key apparel and footwear producing countries in a targeted way.
