HCM City's CPI falls in December as petrol prices drop

The consumer price index (CPI) of Ho Chi Minh City in December fell by 0.11% over the previous month, which was mainly driven by the declines in the oil and petrol prices, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Department.

The CPI reduction in December was attributed to the price decreases of five out of 11 categories of goods with the sharpest decrease in the price of transport, down 1.83% against November.

The Statistics Department said that the decline of transport prices was due to the lower prices of passenger vehicle fees, transport costs and petrol prices on November 18 and December 3. The price of transport was reduced by 10.98% compared to early this year.

The category of household appliances and equipment fell by 1.23% while tourism and entertainment services went down by 0.58%. The category of restaurants and food services, and apparel, hats and footwear saw a slight decrease of 0.17% and 0.01% respectively.

At the same time, the prices of five groups of commodities went up compared to the previous month including drinking and cigarettes (up 0.14%), housing, electricity and water (up 0.6%), medicine and health services (up 0.18%), education (up 0.04%), and other goods and services (up 0.41%). Notably, the price of post and telecommunications remained unchanged.

Yesterday, the Hanoi Statistics Office announced the Hanoi CPI in December which also went down slightly by 0.03% compared to November.
