Industrial production index rises 5.9% in January

The industrial production index (IIP) in January surged 5.9% compared to the same period in 2015, announced the General Statistics Office (GSO) on January 28. 

The inventory index of the manufacturing and processing industry as of January 1, 2016 increased 9.2% compared to the same period in 2015.

The electricity manufacturing and distribution industry recorded high growth at 13.2%, followed by water supply and wastewater and garbage treatment at 9.7%, manufacturing and processing at 8.2%, and mining at 4.2%.

Several sectors also saw higher growth compared to the same period last year including the production of motor vehicles, up 15.9%; beverages, up 15%; metals, up 14.1%; and furniture, up 13.3%.

Quang Nam province posted the highest IIP in January compared to other provinces and cities at 59%. It was followed by Thai Nguyen at 20.6%, Hai Phong at 15.7% and Hanoi at 14.4%.

The inventory index of the manufacturing and processing industry as of January 1, 2016 increased 9.2% compared to the same period in 2015 with the production of beverages witnessing the highest inventory index, up 95.7%.

Many sectors saw low or declining inventory including the production of metals (down 0.7%), production of chemicals and chemical products (down 8.6%), production of cigarettes (down 59.1%), and production of vehicles (down 62%).

The number of workers at industrial companies as of January 1, 2016 went up by 5.8% compared to the same period last year with the highest rise in Thai Nguyen (up 36%), Vinh Phuc (15.7%) and Quang Nam (12.8%).
